Marseille City Guide
Marseille is the second city of the tournament after Paris hosting 4 pool matches and 2 quarter finals.
Should England qualify for the quarter finals, they will play the winner or runner up of pool B here.
Marseille is an coastal city built around the horseshoe shaped harbour. On the curve of the horseshoe is the lively restaurant street, quai des Belges. Marseille has a reputation for being a rugged and cosmopolitan port with plenty of rough edges and it is advisable to be wary after dark.
Having said that, Marseille is also full of pleasant surprises, like fantastic food and a lively nightlife.
The Stade Vйlodrome is one of the most famous and feared stadiums in France. It has a reputation for being a place where passions run high, and where home teams, local or national, seldom lose.
It is the home of football club Olympique Marseille, known locally as l’OM. Built in 1937, the original Vйlodrome was renowned for the loud roar that the crowd could muster, which was assisted by amplification caused by the stadium design. This effect was lost when the ground was enlarged for the FIFA World Cup 1998, and its capacity increased to the present 60,000.
Quai de Rive Neuve in Vieux Port will really be buzzing on match days and is going to be one of the places to visit during the tournament.
Before the match, be sure to visit the fish market in Vieux Port which provides fresh ingredients for the city’s speciality: bouillabaisse. This text was adapted from the offical guide, why not buy it online at the Rugby Store by clicking on the book image now. Priced only Ј11.99
