Jason Robinson MBE retired from rugby on December 1 2007 after appearing for the Barbarians against South Africa at Twickenham.

It marked the end of a remarkable career which transcended both Rugby Union and League and marked Jason out as one of the outstanding rugby players of his generation.

He dispelled the theory that it takes a whole career to become a rugby union legend by establishing himself as one of the highest profile players in the Northern Hemisphere and scoring the try that helped England to triumph 20-17 over Australia in the 2003 RWC final. His vivid sidesteps and swerves bewitched and bemused would-be tacklers since his Sharks’ debut against Coventry in the autumn of 2000 and he captained his club for three seasons.

Having announced his test rugby retirement in September 2005 he was tempted back on to the international scene by Brian Ashton in January 2007, playing in the RBS 6 Nations before captaining England on the summer tour to South Africa.

He played the opening two RWC 2007 matches against USA and South Africa, during which he strained his left hamstring which threatened to end his tournament. However, he recovered in time for the quarter-final against Australia.

He enjoyed a fabulous run with Wigan Warriors at Rugby League, playing in 302 rugby league matches overall, scoring 184 tries and winning 12 Great Britain and seven England caps. He has now played 540 matches in both codes as a professional player dating back to his rugby league debut against Hull in 1992.

A British Lion with five Test appearances against Australia and New Zealand,   he was educated at Cross Flatts Park Middle School and Matthew Murray High School in Leeds.

Nicknamed ‘Billy Whizz’, his scoring exploits in rugby league became legendary but he has also flourished in the 15-a-side game with test hat tricks against Canada and Italy and four tries against Romania in November 2001. He led Sale Sharks to their first Guinness Premiership title in May 2006 with a 45-20 win over Leicester Tigers at Twickenham.

A committed Christian, Jason says that he has been very fortunate to play with and against some of the best rugby players in both codes. “Winning the World Club Championship with Wigan in Brisbane in 1994 was special but the high point so far has to be the World Cup final victory in Australia.“
