Lawrence Bruno Nero Dallaglio MBE has achieved almost every accolade in the game and, alongside Rory Underwood (85), is the second most capped
England player behind Jason Leonard (114).

He moved level with Underwood when coming on as a replacement in this year’s Rugby World Cup final against South Africa – his second appearance in a RWC final.

In a career stretching back to 1995, he played every minute of all seven matches in the 2003 RWC triumph – the only player to do so – and then succeeded the retired Martin Johnson as captain for the next eight games.

It was his second time as captain, both spells spanning 22 Tests, before stepping down from the test arena in 2004 and then suffering a broken ankle during the first midweek game on his third Lions’ tour to New Zealand in 2005. He suffered a similar fate on the 1991 tour, when a midweek knee injury prevented him adding to his three Lions’ Tests.

However, he was recalled by then England Head Coach Andy Robinson in the 2006 RBS 6 Nations and appeared as a replacement in four out of five matches.

He then did not feature until, on the back of leading London Wasps to Heineken Cup triumph against Leicester Tigers in May, he was named by Brian Ashton in his RWC preliminary training squad and then made the final cut for France.

A loyal, one-club man, he has been – and is, as captain – a driving force behind the ongoing success of Wasps.

Did you know?

Born to an Italian father, Lawrence Bruno Nero could have played for the Azzurri. Despite their efforts to lure him as an 18-year-old, he decided that his future lay with England.

Educated at Ampleforth College and Kingston University he first came to prominence as a 21-year-old rookie loose forward and member of the winning England RWC Sevens team at Murrayfield in 1993. He and Matt Dawson are the only two players to have won the Sevens and XVs World Cups.

As a schoolboy at King House School in Richmond, he sang backing vocals on Tina Turner’s 1985 hit ‘We don’t need another hero’
