Shaun Perry, who started the first two RWC 2007 pool games against USA and South Africa, only became a full time player in 2005 when switching from Coventry to Bristol Rugby, his day job having been as a welder in Tipton.
He made such an impact that he was chosen to play for England A against Italy in February 2006 and then captained the side against Ireland A at Gloucester the following month. He was in line for a place on the full tour of Australia in 2006 before fracturing a wrist.
Originally with Dudley Kingswinford, he celebrated becoming the first England Counties player to graduate to full test status with a long-range try on his debut against New Zealand last November at the age of 28.
He played for England Saxons against Italy A in February before rejoining the senior squad and was a replacement for three of this year’s RBS 6 Nations matches. He toured South Africa in June and then started the Investec Challenge 62-5 victory over Wales.
Shaun is an integral part of the Bristol Rugby team and has now made 43 appearances, scoring 10 tries.

Shaun is appreciative of the efforts that Bristol Head Coach Richard Hill, a former England scrum half, has invested in him. “He has transformed me into the player I am, looked after me and guided me. I owe him a lot,“ says Shaun, who began playing as a seven-year-old at Heathbrook, the home of Dudley Kingswinford RFC. He graduated to the first team, represented Midlands Colts, and moved to Coventry where Hill spotted him. “I still go down to the Dudley club when I can to keep in touch with the players,“ adds Shaun.
A 16 handicap golfer, he would like to go into property development when he has finished rugby.
