Toby Flood, who moved to Leicester Tigers from Newcastle Falcons this season, started the final Investec Challenge series match against New Zealand at No 10.
He had played at inside centre throughout the 2008 RBS 6 Nations, recording his team's first try of the tournament in the opening match against Wales, before adding another in the following game against Italy.
He replaced injured Newcastle Falcons team-mate Jamie Noon in the 2007 RWC squad, flying out two games into the tournament, and subsequently had a hand in England’s progress to the final, coming on as a second half replacement for Mike Catt against Australia, France and South Africa.
Educated at King’s School, Tynemouth, Toby represented Northumberland Under 16s and 18s, was a county standard athlete and played cricket for the Under 16s. He appeared for England 18 Group and helped the Under 21s to achieve a second Grand Slam in three seasons in March 2006.
He played the first of his 17 tests to date off the bench for Charlie Hodgson against Argentina in November 2006. The following year he started England’s RBS 6 Nations matches against France and Wales at No 10 and England’s two summer tests against South Africa at No 12. Included in the 47-man Preliminary 2007 RWC training squad, he missed the final cut.
A product of the Newcastle Academy, Toby played for Alnwick and Morpeth before joining the Falcons in April 2003. He dropped a goal and kicked two penalties as a 19-year-old on his debut in the 29-28 win over London Wasps at Kingston Park in February 2005.
