What is Leisure Rugby?
There are two parts to Leisure Rugby; playing and promotion. It is any event that makes the game of Rugby Union more accessible and enjoyable for everyone adhering to the underlying principles of:
- Introduce new people (players/spectators/volunteers/officials) to the game
- Help in the retention of existing people by reinvigorating their passion for the game
- For adults 16+ female and male across the whole community
- For social and fun involvement, recreational, fun levels
- Expose the game to a wider audience outside of rugby circles
Playing
Leisure Rugby can be any Modified Form of the Game of Rugby e.g.:
- Tag
- Touch
- Beach
- 7's
- 10's/12’s
- Modified 15 a side
This includes Veterans/Golden Oldies, 20:20 played for the community club/ FE & HE areas which are not part of the player pathway.
It does not include, U7/U8 Club Tag, Primary School Tag, Mini/Midi continuum RFU/ RFUW U13 - U16 variations, IRB U19 variations.
Promotion
The RFU attends a variety of events where the game is marketed and celebrated to attract interest and raise awareness of what can be play and where. The main areas of interest are where there are a significantly high percentage of the population in attendance especially where any of the RFU’s its partners target groups.
The RFU have a range of different promotional vehicles and resources which are provided to benefit the community game in supporting events. Local clubs are actively encouraged to make use of these to aid recruitment and retention of members. Events are supported in accordance to the underlying principles of Leisure Rugby though the following examples highlight priority areas:
- Corporate exhibitions
- County Shows
- Club Recruitment Days
- County Sport Partnership support
- Local Authority schemes
- Other non-rugby major sporting events e.g. Cowes Week, Badminton, Tall Ships
- Race, Houses of Parliament Sports Days, Air shows etc
