Suffolk 7s Champions for third year running!!
Sunday saw the senior suffolk sevens take place at Ipswich YM rugby club.Bury sent a Under 23 side of players who have come up through the club youth setup. The first game saw Bury take on the host side Ipswich YM. The young Bury side started with speed and flair and in a game lasting only 7 minutes each way racked up a score of 54 -0. The scorers were, Peter Clarke, Dan Wagner (2) Rob Peterick (2), Chris Potter, Tom Wapshott and Will Martin. This set the standard for any team wishing to win the title.
In the second Round Bury were given a bye as Hadleigh failed to turn up. This meant that Bury were through to the Semi final where there were up against a very good Sudbury rugby club side. This game was a real cat and mouse affair with neither side wishing to make a mistake, an it was Will Martin who opened the scoring with a chip over Sudbury defence and then he ran through to collect the ball to score under posts. This was quickly followed by an excellent team try finished off by Dan Wagner, and a second try from Martin who also added three conversions for a 21-0 halftime lead. The start of the second half Peter Clarke showed a superb sidestep to create a gap for himself to slip through and score in the corner. Sudbury then threw caution to the wind and scored a well worked try right on the final whistle for a score of 26-5.
In the final Bury were up against the impressive RAF Wattisham side who featured mostly players from Fiji who specialise in 7 a side rugby. Bury started the game with some of the hardest tackles seen all day, which put the Wattisam side on the backfoot. Bury used the lessons learnt in the earlier rounds and played the best rugby of the day and ran in six tries without answer and win the final by the biggest margin anyone can remember.The scorers were Wagner (2), Clarke, Charlie Wapshott, Petherick and Martin,who also added four conversions for a final score of 38-0.
