With the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 most county rugby activity was suspended until after the end of the conflict. There is occasional mention of teams being organised to play for/against army units based in the area during the early war years.
At the end of the War the Northumberland Committee attempted to revive rugby by arranging a series of friendly matches in what would have been the last two months of a normal season in the spring of 1919.
The County Championship was resumed in the 1919-1920 season
