Game 1 Keswick 5 - Cockermouth 20
Keswick started the game in heavy conditions but Cockermouth were the brighter with Tom Norman creating early pressure. Keswick broke forward and good defensive work allowed the visitors to counter and apply sustained pressure in the Keswick half. Eventually Colm Dubieniec was able to power through to score the first try in the far corner. From the re-start Caitlin McGuire demonstrated that quick passing was likely to break the deadlock between forwards but it was Colm Dubieniec who again made good progress before releasing the ball for Josh Watson to run clear and score the second try. Scott Merrin supplied Tom Norman who did well before being overwhelmed by a determined Keswick defence. Cockermouth were always competitive and Colm Dubieniec increased their lead on the half-time whistle with a try scored by going around the home team and putting down at the end of a good run.
Keswick continued to make this game a balanced contest and both teams worked hard to win the ball and retain possession in the middle of the field. Scott Merrin was able to make good progress only to find Keswick able to turn solid defence into counter attack. Keswick contested all over the pitch and eventually seized possession from a Cockermouth line-out to score their only try. At the close of the game Colm Dubieniec scored his third try by driving himself into the corner.
Both teams applied themselves well in this contest and are beginning to appreciate the importance of supportive team-play and passing the ball.
