Cockermouth 7 Millom 9
Millom made an excellent start easily pushing through the Cockermouth defence. Cockermouth did take possession only to lose it on the line and from there the visitors ran the ball down the field for the first score of the match. After a slow start some of Cockermouth’s players began to get into their stride and Tom Norman ripped the ball and, with support from Keenan Ling, Catie McGuire and Freya McDowell, managed to move the ball towards the try line. The final phase was missing however and Millom re-took possession. Excellent tackling by Lauren Wishart allowed Aaron Whild to push forward but a knock-on near the sideline saw possession pass to the visitors who returned it for their second try.
Despite going behind Cockermouth kept together, attacked well and started competing at the maul. It was following a maul that Cockermouth moved the ball to within 5 meters of the Millom try line which allowed Keenan Ling to break away and score Cockermouth’s first try. Millom answered quickly with their third try shortly followed by a fourth. Tom Norman kept Cockermouth in touch with Cockermouth’s second score. The home side were starting to operate more effectively as Kieran Wilson and Lauren Wishart tackled strongly and stole the ball from Millom however Millom intercepted to run the ball home and quickly capitalised by scoring again directly from the re-start. Cockermouth continued to drive hard against Millom with lots of fast tackles and some excellent teamwork from Ellie Mason and Freya McDowell but their opponents found another clear space and took it for their seventh try of game.
Cockermouth began the second half at a fast pace and Keenan Ling, supported by William Bell, took the ball downfield and his strength allowed him to drive through the defence and score in the corner. In the cold and wind it was hardly surprising that errors would creep into the game and several scrums resulted during the second half. Aaron Whild battled well but eventually Millom were able to rip the ball away from Cockermouth for their eight try. Cockermouth upped their game and started to apply pressure to the Millom defence. Jack Wilson and Tom Stainton allowed Tom Norman to burst free and take the ball across the line for Cockermouth. This was immediately followed by another try for Keenan Ling who again charged through the defensive line and ran the ball home from half way down the pitch. Aaron Whild was next to get on the score sheet for Cockermouth followed again by Tom Norman for the home sides seventh score. Despite this valiant fight back Cockermouth’s slow start had left them with slightly too much to do and Millom sealed their victory with their ninth try before the final whistle blew.
