Game 1 Cockermouth 5 - Wigton 3
Wigton kicked off the game with sunny skies overhead, soft ground underfoot and a fresh breeze blowing across the pitch. Cockermouth started with some good forward play, driving and binding, but Wigton broke free with lively defence feeding the ball to Alex Tipney to break away and put the visitors into a lead after 4 minutes.
Directly from the re-start Jordan Freil proved the value of running straight at the opposition as he immediately leveled the score. Wigton scored the next try with some good re-cycling of the ball, which allowed Natasha Richardson to use her speed and vision to skip around a tackle and put Wigton back into the lead. Once again Cockermouth used the re-start for Jordan Friel to produce a carbon copy of his first try.
Approaching half time Freya McDowell stole the ball after Wigton had recycled it well, her quick run resulted in a lineout and Cockermouth drove on into some good defence from Wigton. Tom Norman led the attack, with forward support, delivering the ball for Daniel Owen to score. The first half finished with Freya McDowell making good ground and using the width of the pitch
Wigton tested the Cockermouth resolve from the restart, winning a couple of scrums close to the Cockermouth line. Eventually the Cockermouth defence was beaten by Josh Leeson running around the blindside from the scrum. Once again Cockermouth’s strength at the restart was rewarded when Jordan Friel, supported by Freya McDowell, gave momentum to a fine try by Harry Tyrell.
The next restart saw Wigton bind and drive to test the home defence, errors of a high tackle and then collapsing a maul led to Wigton scrums but Cockermouth stayed focused and Freya McDowell ran out of her own half, passed to Tom Norman who moved the ball on to Jordan Friel to score in the last move of the Game.
