Cockermouth RUFC held the first of three festivals on Sunday with four teams from three local clubs joining two from the hosts to enjoy a marvellous day of rugby. Under 8’s teams from Cockermouth (2), Egremont (2), Keswick and Wigton produced the excitement and thrills that only tag rugby can.
The teams played in two leagues of three with Egremont A edging Cockermouth Wasps by one try in the opening game. All the contests were close affairs that could have gone either way but for a missed try here or a dropped ball there. In the second league it was Keswick who proved the stronger narrowly edging out Egremont B and Cockermouth Hornets to go through to the final.
Meanwhile in League one Egremont A and Cockermouth Wasps did just enough to beat a small but determined Wigton team and it was Egremont A’s winning try in their earlier encounter that saw them through to face Keswick.
In the spirit of the previous games the Final was nip and tuck with the scores tied at 3 each on the final whistle. Egremont A took the final due to their superior points difference in the league matches. Festival sponsor Mrs Judith Jarman of the Cottage Garden Cockermouth presented winners and runners up medals along with the trophy.
Although Cockermouth’s teams were narrowly pipped at the post in the league stage one player did receive a medal. Cockermouth’s Luke Armstrong had sportingly made up the numbers for Keswick and scored four tries on their way to the final, thus receiving a runners up medal.
All the players were the real winners by enjoying their rugby, treating their coaches and spectators to a wonderful exhibition of tag rugby and playing at all times in the spirit of the game.
