Cockermouth bounced back from a heavy defeat last week with a good win against a very committed Wigton second string. In the opening quarter neither team could develop any pattern in their play due to a lack of consistency in dominating their own possession at the set piece. The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes by the home side when David Irving broke blind, a simple draw and give released Jamie Ward to score in the corner.
The new half partnership of youngster Ross McGuire and veteran John Taylor proved to be instrumental in keeping the visitors pinned deep in their own half. Increased pressure saw props John Walker and Karl Whild increase the lead to 15-0. Cockermouth’s domination of the second quarter was completed on the stroke of half time when Ross McGuire took the ball in against a much bigger Wigton forward and cleverly spun out of the tackle to score the final try of the half.
Wigton had the better of the third quarter; their strong forwards mauled the ball extremely well and made it difficult for Cockermouth to maintain their rhythm. They came close on several occasions but the home side’s defence held out. As the final quarter loomed, Cockermouth upped the pace of their game and the tiring visitors, who had played with 14 men throughout, found it increasingly difficult to stem the flow of good quality ball Cockermouth’s forwards were now generating.
Further tries by Army under 21 player Ashley Irving, John Patrick and John Taylor along with two conversions by David Irving gave a final score of 39-0 to Cockermouth.
