Eastern Counties Cup v's Ipswich 26/10/08
Colchester U17's took on local team Ipswich in the opening game of their Eastern Counties Cup campaign, in wet conditions that made handling difficult. Colchester set out their stall in the first minute with a fine backs move from a scrum immediately after kick off, with the ball moved through the hands to Adam Walker, playing at outside centre, who broke the tackle to score the first try in the corner. The conversion was narrowly missed.
Ipswich fought back from this initial set back, retaining possession within their forwards, but Colchester's real advantage lay in their Backs, who dominated the exchanges in the first half, with the second try coming from Drew Groves, and a third shortly afterwards from Jake Jemmott, playing at no 8, but taking the ball in the outside centre position, before stepping inside his defender and cruising over the line. Both Tries were converted by Matt Barnes.
Colchester Forwards were keen to play their part, and a fine handling move involving forwards and backs all keeping the move going forward was capped off by Ross Neale scoring close to the posts, with the try converted. Within minutes, Chris Cole added his name to the try list, after a very industrious performance, he reacted quickest from a scrum close to the try line to touch down on a ball dropped by the unfortunate Ipswich fly half.
Colchester continued to apply pressure to the Ipswich team and from a scrum on the 22, Matt Barnes playing at 12 took an inside ball from Drew Groves at fly half, to run in unopposed, a try that he proceeded to convert. A further well deserved try from the novice U16 prop, Alex Pakenham Walsh, was also converted bringing the score to 47-00 at the half time point.
Early in the second half, Chris Connelly, playing wide on the wing, scored the final try to round off a comprehensive team performance prior to the match being stopped early by the referee.
The team can now look forward with confidence to their next cup match against Diss on 30th November.
