U14A Match Report Arnold
On the 11th of November we played Arnold away. The wind was blowing a gale so this would make passing and kicking difficult. We lost the coin toss and they decided to kick off, the whistle blew and the match had begun. The first few rucks went very well and we were working well as a team. When we got it to the backs, Christian Williams saw a gap and ran straight through it, then he used his pace to beat the rest of the defenders and we scored the first try. It was converted with a great drop kick by Ben Cuddworth. Arnold didn’t give up though and hit back with a try which they really had to work for, because our defence was holding up well. It wasn’t converted though. When we got the ball we made the most of it but sometimes we did make mistakes. Once more we got it to the backs but this time George Corns got the ball and he burst through a gap with his great pace and scored his first try of the season. Again it was converted with another awesome kick by Ben Cuddworth. Just before the whistle blew for half time they got another try but they didn’t manage to convert it.
The second half didn’t begin well because the referee was making a lot of bias decisions in Arnolds favour and this led them to getting another try which wasn’t converted. We weren’t giving up with out a fight but every time we got to their line the referee would say it was a penalty to Arnold. We were putting some great tackles in but they just kept coming. We were using the ball well and making progress but again the referee would turn the ball over. This was pretty much the pattern of the game for the rest of the half. Mr Skeith was getting rather aggravated with the referee because he wanted to make a sub but he just kept playing the match. The match was coming to an end and they had already scored some tries but we held our heads high and battled on even with the odds stacked against us. We came close to scoring a few times but didn’t manage to quite get the points. It was the end of the match and the final score was 25-14 to Arnold.
U14A Match Report Stockport
On the 30th of September the U14A played Stockport away. The weather was quite good for playing rugby in. We lost the coin toss and they decided to kick to us. They kicked off and we got the ball. We started off pretty bad and we lost the second ruck. Even though we lost the ball we still got straight back into the game by pushing them backwards. Then their No.8 who was at least 6ft got the ball and ran down the side line and they scored their first try which wasn't converted. We kicked off with our heads up and we got knocked them back and back. Our backs were putting tremendous pressure on there backs and forcing them to make errors. Their forwards had the ball and their No.8 got it again and scored again. The try wasn't converted. We had enough of this and as we kicked off our whole team sprinted up at them. We quickly stopped them where they stood. We again put great pressure on them and we forced them to knock the ball on. We lost the scrum but we made them knock on again. This time we won the scrum and Ross Collins picked up and slipped in for a try. Unfortunately Ben Cudworth couldn't convert it. Towards the end of the half they scored 2 more tries which were converted. At halftime our coach Mr Skeith had a talk with us to get our heads together and to get organised. So we started the second half very well putting all our tackles in. Unfortunately they got it out to their backs and managed to score right in the corner it wasn't converted though. We hit back after the kick and stole the ball. We were making great progress with the forwards and backs linking up well. Our forwards were running well but one of our players got isolated and we lost the ball. We ended up defending again and we wouldn't stop tackling. They kept making progress and scored a try which wasn't converted. We were getting frustrated and decided to put an end to this scoring spree and score our own try. So we kicked off and stole the ball almost straight away. Our whole team were doing everything right and it showed. Daniel Petho had the ball and went on a fantastic run, he dodged 3 people then when their fly half tried to tackle him, Daniel knocked him flying through the air. When he was finally tackled we were in there 22. The forwards picked up again and got to their 5m line. Then one of their players gave away a penalty. It was 10m from the try line and Ross Stevenson stepped up and took the ball and went speeding in for the try. Ben Cudworth got the conversion with ease. After the kick they also hit back with another try which was converted. The match was over and the final score was 41-12 to Stockport.
U14A Match Report Giggleswick
On the 23rd of September the U14A played Giggleswick. It was like a summer's day and not terrific conditions to play rugby in. We won the coin toss and we chose to receive the ball. They kicked off and we got the ball cleanly. We got off to a pretty good start with the forwards and backs working together well. They were a very big side and that showed in the rucks, mauls and scrums. Unfortunately we lost the ball in a bad position and they scored there first try which was not converted. We kicked the ball back and stopped them. Our whole team were putting great tackles in but on there side it was a 1 man team, number thirteen was too quick and just ran round the pitch without passing and scored another try which was converted. As we kicked off again it didn't go ten so they chose a scrum down on the half way. The ball was fed in and they got it, when it was passed out there was brilliant pressure from our backs and we got them down again and again. Then it was passed to their number thirteen who once again ran down passed and down the side of the pitch, but George Corns was there to slow him down then Ross Collins tackled him to the floor. George had injured his shoulder in the process of stopping their main player. Andrew Hampson then stole the ball with support from Christian Williams and we then made steady progress up the pitch. It was coming to the end of the half and they had possession of the ball. They passed it out wide and they managed to burst through our line and score a try which wasn't converted. Another try was then scored just before the half which wasn't converted. It was half time.
The second half began with a kick to them, and their forwards got it and tried to run through us which didn't work. So they tried their backs again but that didn't work either, we were putting to much pressure on them. This led to a mistake from them and it was a penalty to us 15m away from the try line. Ross Collins bashed it up and then we tried to drive him over but they stole the ball. It came to their number ten who tried to kick it but was pressurised. Our play in the second half was a lot better and we got up the pitch with some ease. The forwards and backs linked well together once more and we got so close. Then again we were unable to get in for a try. This continued for a while and we were doing well but guess who got the ball, yes the number thirteen and once again he ran around but he was going to get tackled so he decided to do an up an over for himself which somehow worked and he scored again. It was converted. We kicked off and they couldn't get through so they kicked it high which did work and scored a try which was converted. We were tired but still didn't give up and made one last drive which almost resulted in a try. It was full time and the final score was 41-0 to them.
U14A Match Report
On the 16th of September 2006 the U14 A team played the strong team of Kirkham Grammar School away. The pitches were very wet and the ball became like a bar of soap. The captains went over for the coin toss; we won the coin toss and chose to receive the ball. The game began with a strong ruck from the forwards. We passed it out to the wing where but the winger got isolated and they got the ball. They managed to get into our half of the pitch and we kept putting our tackles in. Their forwards kept running the ball at us and then rucking over. Our team got sucked into the ball and they just passed it out and got the try and didn't convert it. As we kicked off we ran them down and tackled them straight away. We kept tackling and tackling but they passed it out and got up the pitch. Again we put our tackles in but they were to powerful and they got another try. They didn't convert it. We kicked off again and their backs got the ball and made slow progress. We kept stealing the ball and getting up the pitch but we couldn't get over the try line. Kirkham used their backs once more and got in for another try which was converted. It was getting to half time and there were a few scrums. They were a much bigger team than us and we kept on loosing the scrums. Just before the half time whistle they scored another try and converted it and Andrew Hampson got injured trying to stop them.
At half time Mr Skieth brought on the subs. We began the second half well, putting in a lot of crunching tackles by the whole team. We managed to get the ball a few times and we used them well. We got it out to the backs and they passed it down the line but unfortunately the ball was too slippery and we knocked it on. We gave the last half all we could and we were doing a lot better. Our team and Kirkham were both tiring but Kirkham kept on scoring no matter how many tackles we made they wouldn't stop. Towards the end Connor Alderson was injured and taken off the pitch. The final score was 50- 0 to Kirkham.
U14A Match Report
On the 9th of September 2006 the U14 A team played Wilmslow in our first game of the season at home. The referee called the captains over and we ended up receiving the ball. As the game began Ross Collins got the ball and ran the ball in, the forwards then rucked over the ball. Then unfortunately we lost the ball in our own half from a knock on. We then drove them back but then they passed it down the line and ran down the side of the pitch. We stopped them in our 22 but they put the pressure on and scored their first try which they converted. As we kicked the ball to them we charged them down and stopped them in their tracks. We kept stealing the ball back but always somehow managed to loose it again. Wilmslow made steady progress up the pitch. We held them back on our try line but then we gave them a penalty. We all spread out on the line, they took the penalty and passed it out wide but we failed to tackle them and they scored their second try which they converted. It was half time.
After a good talk with Mr Skieth we got our heads together and started the second half. We got off to a good start and put all the pressure on them. Then George Corns made a great tackle and got the ball with support from Christian Williams, George off loaded to him. Christian then got tackled about 15m from the try line but thankfully Ross Collins was there to pick the ball up and then he used his pace and power to bash through the defence to score a awesome try. Then Ben Cudworth converted it with a powerful kick from a difficult angle. They kicked the ball to us which we ran down the middle. We kept the ball for a while with some strong scrums. At this point both teams were getting tired, then they got the ball and beat us wide and slipped in for a try which was converted. They continued beating us wide until they had scored 2 more tries, 1 of which they converted. Towards the end we held them back and then the match was over. The final score was 33-7 to Wilmslow.
