The Vale of Lune R.U.F.C Mini Junior Section is part of the Club as a whole and operates to foster the game and the development of the game of rugby to children from the ages of six to seventeen. This is achieved by players learning the game in stages taught in strict age groups as directed by the Rugby Football Union.
The Vale of Lune Mini Junior Section is committed to the development of Rugby Union in the area and it aims to achieve this within a friendly family atmosphere thereby teaching the values of Rugby as a concept and not just a game on the field.
We run age groups from U7’s to U17’s and the age group your child would join is determined by their age on the 1st September (as school years are).
We have a Child Protection Policy and Child Protection Officer Janet McSporran. If anyone would like to see a copy of Child Protection Policy please do not hesitate to ask. We have codes of conducts for players, parents and coaches and policies and procedures in place for the section.
Our teams are all led by qualified Rugby Union Coaches and many hold First Aid Certificates also. The game is developed in stages leading to the full fifteen a side game at Under 13 level. This is done to enable skills to be taught gradually and with an easier understanding for the youngsters.
- Under 7’s and U8’s play tag rugby (non-contact) on a very small pitch with only 7 players on the pitch at one time. No kicking
- Under 9’s play with 9 players and at this age tackling is introduced, and a non-contested scrum formed. No kicking
- Under 10’s play with 9 players and at this age a contested scrum is introduced (only three man) and line out is introduced to the game for the first time. No Kicking
- Under 11’s the team is increased to 12 players introducing a second row in the scrum and a full back – the pitch is half the size of a full pitch and the game begins in march on to full fifteen aside rugby. Kicking is introduced to the game for the first time in this age group.
- Under 12’s as the Under 11 game
This is a brief guide to each age group; this is determined by the RFU Continuum and all Clubs in England run to the same laws.
