(by Dom Brockes, 2nd team Captain)
From the off the game was tough in the forwards with Teddington having a good pack. The early exchanges were fairly even with the Dubs backs having some good ball and making some good clean breaks through determined running from Tom W-J, new man Ollie Westover and Chris Thompson.
Teddington persisted in their tactic of keeping the ball tight and this paid off with a sustained period of pressure in the dubs half and 22. We defended very well and drove them back with great tackling in the loose from Big Dave Ambrose, Richard Pennington and Phil Waugh.
Our backs were an ever-present danger and a period of good running and kicking saw Ts give away a penalty for a high shot on Ferg (alias Ollie!). Phil W stepped up to slot the first points of the game, 3-0 the Dubs.
With the introduction of wonder sub and another new man Warren Todd at No.8, the Dubs had a series of great interplay passages which culminated in a try for the hard running Rob "dont i look good in this jacket" Tindall, 8-0 the Dubs.
Late in the game the Dubs were once again near the Ts line, however one loose pass and a chip kick through and T's won a line out back on our try line. A good catch and drive saw them cross the line for an unconverted try, 8-5 the Dubs. Soon after The Ts forwards managed to snaffle another try due to (another) slightly errant throw from Dom! 10-8 Teddington.
However, the pick of the tries was yet to come and following some proper rugby with passing and everything, Tom W-J muscled over for what turned out to be the winning score, 13-10 the Dubs.
We didn't have it all our own way as the last ten minutes was full of great defensive work with big brave hits from Andy "man of Steele", Peter Brown, Warren Todd et al with Teddington pounding our line with some smart forward and back play but to no avail, the match ended with a fair result after a close, well fought game.
Special mention to Ali Mac, who played almost the whole game carrying an injury, student Tom who had also trained earlier in the day and new men Ollie and Warren - oh, and a bunch of country Toffs who had got lost on their shooting trip and decided to stick around to watch.
(Editor's note - that would be the 'Country Gents' dress code for the day being followed to the letter by the 1st XV and other spectators, not some errant group of landowners.)
