Dubs 22 – Kingston 2’s 0 (29/03/08)
All ways up this was a very strange day – with hooker Kieran playing his last game against old rivals Fire Brigade before he and Tanya head off to Seattle, we were looking forward to a final game and a night out to see them off properly.
Unfortunately, we arrived at Fire Brigade to find out that they could not get a team out and were actually in the middle of formally disbanding the club at an EGM. Needless to say the mood was sombre, and aside from offering a few words of condolence we felt it best to stay out of the way of the few disconsolate members left at the clubhouse.
With 18 players ready for a game we decided to play an ‘all-Dubs’ game just for a run out and for 30 minutes we happily battered pieces out of each other.
Jonesey from Fire Brigade then interrupted the game to ask if we wanted to play Kingston 3’s whose oppo had cried off – we agreed and trooped back inside to wait for them to arrive. 20 minutes later a ref and what turned out to be Kingston 2nd team arrived and with a mixture of big lumps and some young backs, looked a better team than we expected. A game of 25 minutes each way duly kicked off.
With us playing against the strong wind in the first half, the first half was very tight with the Dubs defence standing firm and the pack more than holding its own. In the second half the game opened up with Dom in determined mode fighting his way over under the sticks for a converted try, 7-0. A second followed soon after, (sorry – forgot the try scorer – was it Ollie???) out wide on the right, 12 - 0. Kieran was awarded the conversion attempt as a farewell gift and fluffed it completely, to the general amusement of all. (The full photo sequence is on Facebook – it’s classic)
Kieran then made amends by scoring a try, also out wide - which he sensibly refused to try and convert. Ross’ attempt felt short, 17-0. Jonesey then appeared on the touchline demanding a run-out and came in for a debut appearance in the Dubs front row. No doubt more than a little hacked off after seeing his club fold, he then scored the pick of the tries with a strong run from the 22 and a good few Kingston tacklers trying ineffectually to pull him back, 22 – 0, kick unconverted.
Aside from Rushie making himself a natural target by taking to the field for Kingston late on, the game finished without further incident or scores. Thanks very much to Kingston 2’s for turning up to give us a game and allowing us to see Kieran and Tanya off in style.
