Dubs 1st XV 0 vs Old Oundelians 72 (League - 09/02/2008)
With a scoreline line like the above, at first glance you might not think there is much positive to say about the game - I disagree and so do the 15 Dubs who took to the field this Saturday. With most of the regular first XV absent attending the KCL Rob Tagg Memorial game, in years gone by we would have had no option but to concede the game - it is testament to the efforts of the club that we could scrape together sufficient players to put a team out and honour the fixture - something two Surrey 4 teams this weekend failed to do.
Having beaten Oundelians in the first half of the season, a proper rematch would of course have been preferable but the 15 Dubs played the game as best they were able and the scoreline does not do justice to the effort put in by the players. With almost everyone playing out of position it verged at times on the ridiculous - Captain Coops deserves special mention for not only missing the KCL game to lead his team out but also suffering the indiginity of making his debut at full back - something of a change from his regular berth in the 2nd row! Losing Jamie in the centres to a head injury and new hooker Travis to a knee injury didn't help the cause and we started the second half with 13 men.
Oundelians are a much improved team over the early season version so full credit must go to their strike players who ran good lines, scored some good tries and didn't take the piss, a well deserved result. Could we have beaten them with a full squad - if they're still around next season we'll find out, but they seem likely candidates to take one of the promotion spots on current form.
The Dubs who played this game should remember with pride the day they started a game in the certain knowledge that a hiding was on the cards and nonetheless did their very best for the club - well done.
