In Memoriam – Mick Brown (1932-2007)
Wandsworthians Rugby Football Club is saddened to announce that club member Mick Brown passed away on the 7th July 2007, following an 18 month battle with liver cancer which he fought all the way.
He leaves behind sons and fellow Dubs Christopher, Stephen and Andrew, their mother Peggy and his six granddaughters, Sarah, Nicola, Lucy, Charlotte, Meg and Hilary.
Born and brought up around the Wandsworth Road area of Battersea, Mick also lived in Roehampton before moving to Ewell in Surrey where he spent the rest of his life bringing up his family with wife Peggy. He loved Ewell Village where he was a well known character, and often to be found in the local pubs.
Mick fostered his love of rugby by playing rugby netball as a young man, before going on to run the “Old Blues” club for over 35 years. In that time he had a vast number of players playing for him, amongst that number a certain England Captain called Bob Hiller.
In later years he loved going down to his favourite rugby club the Wandsworthians every Saturday to watch the match, see his sons in action and have a few sociables in the bar afterwards. He was without doubt the Dubs’ number 1 fan, and even in the late stages of cancer he still looked forward to receiving his weekly letter on how the team was doing.
His funeral took place on the 13th July 2007 at Leatherhead Crematorium, where a large number of friends and relatives came to pay their respects, followed by a good old knees up at son Andrew’s house to celebrate his very colourful life. He was without doubt one of life’s characters and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
As eldest son Chris said at the funeral, “Dad was like Marmite - you either love it or hate it and if you love it, you cannot get enough of it.”
The club would like to extend their deepest sympathies to his family; he will be missed but remembered.
