The Player Proficiency Awards

The new Rugby Union Proficiency Awards coaching packs are now available to purchase from the RFU’s Community Rugby Shop.

Created to help coaches, teachers and players measure player development, they can form a key part of creating individual player development plans at club, school, college or university level.

Three packs - one for every stage of the game

Available as a Primary School Pack; a Secondary School, College and University Pack or a Club Pack; each includes of a series of tests designed to help assess a player’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as their overall fitness.

What the packs include

Each of the three coaching packs includes a DVD providing a video illustration of each test while highlighting the key coaching points, and covers two or more of the following award programmes:

  • Introduction to rugby award, which covers running, handling and an introduction to the Tag tackle game
  • Tag rugby award, which includes running, handling and Tag tackling tests
  • U8 to U11 fitness award, which includes speed, agility, power, anaerobic and speed endurance tests
  • Mini rugby award, which includes running, handling and contact tests
  • Rugby skills award, which includes running, handling contact and kicking tests

The Primary School Pack contains the Introduction to Rugby Award, Tag Rugby Award and U8 to U11 Fitness Award; the Secondary School, College and University Pack contains the Tag Rugby and Rugby Skills Award; and the Club Pack contains all five of the award programmes.

Players score points for each test and depending on their final scores are banded into bronze, silver or gold levels for the award. Certificates are not included, but you can ordered from the RFU using the certificate order form (PDF 67kB).
