Clegg relishes starting role for club and country

10 March 2010

  • In-form fly half flourishing in first season after move
  • Junior World Championship in Argentina the ultimate goal

A bouyant Rory Clegg returns as the playmaker for England's Under 20 side in Friday night's RBS 6 Nations clash with Scotland.

The Harlequins fly half took centre stage last weekend when his three penalties - the final one drilled over from the halfway line - clinched a much-needed 14-11 win against Guinness Premiership rivals Worcester.

While Clegg insists he wasn't satisfied with his overall performance, he's clearly enjoying life at the Twickenham Stoop after last summer's move from Newcastle Falcons. He is understudying New Zealander Nick Evans and surrounded by some of the country's brightest young backs.

For the next couple of weeks he can focus on England's attempt to clinch a second RBS 6 Nations title in three seasons as they attempt to bounce back from last month's 25-10 defeat against Ireland.

Then there is the longer term prospect of this summer's Junior World Championship, where England want to improve on two second place finishes.

"It was good to start for Quins and to win as I've not had too many opportunities to do that," said Clegg.

"You're in the spotlight kicking goals to win a game but I'm still my own biggest critic and never satisfied, and there's work to do on my overall game. Getting the chance to play in that game will hopefully mean I'm looked at a bit more.

"I knew exactly what the situation was with Nick Evans and that hasn't changed. He's a world class fly half and I certainly wouldn't say I'm a better player than him. I'm quite happy to sit behind him for now and learn from him, take the opportunities I can and try to get given some more."

The Quins squad is now packed full of young England-qualified backs, with Clegg, centres Jordan Turner-Hall, Tom Casson and George Lowe, and wings Seb Stegmann and Sam Smith all appearing in the national Under 20 colours in the last 18 months.

That was one of the attractions for Clegg when he left the Falcons' nest after helping England reach the 2009 IRB Junior World Championship final in Tokyo.

"Harlequins is a nice environment for a young player to be involved in," he said.

"I've played with George Lowe in the England Under 20 side before, Jordan Turner-Hall was a year ahead of us and Tom Casson coming in [from Saracens] adds some extra firepower to a young backline. There are lots of young England qualified backs there and I wanted to be involved with that."

Clegg and Lowe both appeared in that 44-28 JWC final defeat against New Zealand and clinching a global title is near the top of Clegg's wishlist for 2010 once England have completed their RBS 6 Nations assignments.

"I was involved in three games in the RBS 6 Nations last year and this year it'll be three games again," he added.

"We were disappointed with the performance against Ireland but there's still a very positive attitude in the camp and we're looking forward to putting things right against Scotland.

"We want to get back on the horse quickly and we've got bags of talent in the squad. It's just that we've been the makers of our own downfall and made silly mistakes.

"The new players coming in shows what strength in depth we have and that hopefully will serve us well for Argentina. Winning the Junior World Championship is definitely a spur for me. I'd definitely like to go one better."
