- Martin Johnson highlights importance of 22 man squad against Scotland
- Moody, Lawes, Foden and Youngs can have big impact off the bench
Martin Johnson is looking for impact off the bench after some tough selection calls for the RBS 6 Nations clash with Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.
London Wasps flanker Joe Worsley replaces Lewis Moody (Leicester Tigers) for his first start in the 2010 tournament and lock Louis Deacon (Leicester Tigers) replaces injured Simon Shaw (London Wasps), while young Leicester scrum half Ben Youngs takes a place on the England bench for the first time.
England Team Manager Johnson highlighted the depth of his squad and said his replacements have a crucial role to play in Edinburgh.
He said: "The decision on Lewis is a reflection on the strength in depth we have in the squad.
"We felt the best call was to start with Joe and bring Lewis off the bench to give us that impact, and the same with Courtney Lawes who can also provide a big impact. It’s also a harsh call on Paul Hodgson as he’s been fantastic for us but we feel Ben is playing well enough and deserves a chance to be in the 22.
"Players want to start but sometimes to come off the bench and be on the field at the end of the game is equally if not more important."
Looking forward to the contest with former England coach Andy Robinson’s Scotland side, Johnson added: "England Scotland is one of the games you always want to play in. It’ll be a great atmosphere and this is what you get involved in test match rugby for."
