- Squad excited by challenge says England Team Manager
Martin Johnson says his England squad are excited by the challenge of taking on Grand Slam chasing France in Paris but they must make a step up in intensity.
The England Team Manager has made six changes to his side for the RBS 6 Nations clash at the Stade de France, including handing first starts to young Northampton backs Ben Foden and Chris Ashton.
Speaking to RFU TV, Johnson said the pressure is on Marc Lievremont’s side.
"It’s a huge challenge to play in Paris, but we’re all excited about it," Johnson said.
"Our guys have to step up another level intensity wise and take these guys on.
"They’re going for the Grand Slam so there will be enormous pressure on them to win, win well, and in a certain style. They can attack you in all ways and defensively we need to be up to the challenge."
The other changes to England’s starting 15 see Mike Tindall, Simon Shaw, Lewis Moody and Toby Flood return, as Johnson seeks to develop the depth in his squad.
He added: "I believe we are getting some good depth [in the squad] but that needs to be reflected in our performance on the field.
"History and experience tells you that guys get injured and you need a strong squad, looking ahead 18 months to the World Cup we’re going to need two in every position."
