- Robinson “bitterly disappointed” after Scotland narrowly defeated by England
- Scotland fail to convert opportunities into points
Scotland head coach Andy Robinson has said he and his players are “bitterly disappointed” following their defeat to England after his side failed to capitalise on try-scoring opportunities.
Robinson’s frustration was apparent in the coaches box as he watched his side narrowly lose 13-6 at Murrayfield on Saturday.
Scotland were 6-3 up at half-time but Charlie Hodgson charged down a Dan Parks clearance kick just moments into the second half on Saturday to score the game’s only try and put England in front.
Speaking at a post-match press conference, Robinson said the team were frustrated after failing to capitalise on numerous opportunities to put pressure on England.
“It seems little bit like deja vu. We have been here before and obviously we are all bitterly disappointed about what’s happened here,” he said.
“Winning and losing Test matches is all about inches and those small margins. And we have not been able to convert the chances that we took again.
“But we created today, you have got to be able to take those chances and I think we made something like 14 line-breaks. That is the frustration that we all feel amongs the squad and the players.”
Robinson congratulated the England coaching set up for “achieving a win” but said his side would continue to work on their attacking play in training and needed to be “more brutal” in the contact area in future matches.
He said more “clarification” had been needed from referee George Clancy during the match around the breakdown and added: “I just felt there was a slight difference in interpretation in terms of being able to release the ball and release the speed of ball. I felt they were staying on the ball post-tackle for that extra second. That stopped the speed [we could play at] but we weren’t accurate enough and that is something we have got to be better at.”
Scotland were denied a try mid-way through the second half after the television match official ruled against Edinburgh replacement Greig Laidlaw – on for Parks – after 63 minutes.
Robinson said Laidlaw was “relatively confident” that he scored but said such decisions were “small margins”.
Scotland captain Ross Ford echoed his coaches disappointment, adding: “We’ve not taken our chances which is very frustrating.”
