After two successful seasons with Gloucester that brought two England caps, David Attwood is joining Bath Rugby on a two year contract this summer. A former Bristol player, he became a mainstay of the Cherry & Whites’ pack and scored the first of his two Premiership tries in the final minute to secure a 13-13 draw with Worcester Warriors at Kingsholm in the opening match of 2010.
He played 32 times in the competition for Gloucester with his consistency and skills bringing him onto the England Saxons’ radar and selection for last summer’s senior tour to Australia and New Zealand. His appearances against the Barbarians that May, two against Australians Barbarians and another against New Zealand Maori prefaced his first cap off the bench for Tom Palmer against New Zealand at Twickenham in November 2010.
He was subsequently suspended for nine weeks following a stamping incident in the Amlin Challenge Cup game against La Rochelle that made him unavailable to play until February 21.
He represented England Under 19s in the 2006 Junior World Cup, scoring a try in the semi final, and figured in the Under 20 Six Nations campaign the following year.
David is a product of Ridings School and Bristol University, where he obtained a degree in Physics and Philosophy but his rugby emergence was through the Bristol Academy. He played for Dings Crusaders where he came under the benign influence of coach and former Bristol full back Phil Cue and made his Guinness Premiership debut against Sale Sharks in September 2007.
Paul Hull, the Bristol head coach said at the time: "David has been there or thereabouts for a couple of years and I am pleased he was selected on merit, not through an injury."
An England discus thrower in his mid teens, he chose rugby above athletics and was called into the Saxons’ training party for the game against Italy A at Ragusa, Sicily three years ago but was not among the match squad.
When signing for Gloucester, he was expected to compete there against internationals Alex Brown, Will James and the since departed Marco Bortolami and has done that in style.
