Millfield educated and captain of Sale Jets last season, Henry Thomas has changed his geographical location from South to North and has completed his first year of three, studying Economics at Manchester University. He made his England U20 debut in the 26-20 win over Wales at Parc y Scarlets in early February and in June had the distinction of scoring tries against Ireland and New Zealand in the Junior World Championship in Italy.
Kingston-born Henry was previously educated at King Edward’s School, Bath before going to Millfield, where he led the first team in his final year and helped the Sevens’ squad to win ten competitions in two years, including the prestigious Rosslyn Park National tournament twice.
His most memorable match, partly for the wrong reasons, was for Millfield when they lost 25-22 to Bromsgrove in 2008. He said: “We should have won with the team we had.”
Triumphs have still been sprinkled liberally through his embryonic career that has been nurtured by a series of mentors beginning with his father Nigel, a former London Welsh player. Others have been Peter Anglesea at Sale, school coaches John Brimacombe and John Mallett, scrummaging expert Ian Peel, conditioner Neil Taylor and Peter Walton, of England U18.
Henry first played for Bath minis at the age of six and went on to represent England U16, U18 and U19 before joining the U20 squad for a training week in Portugal. He said: “I also went to France with the U16 party and to Italy and South Africa with the U18 squad.”
A former No. 8, he also represented England
U16 at cricket and going into February this year, he had played in 26 Aviva
Premiership matches for the Sharks, 12 of them this season.
