Exhilarating times beckon Don Barrell, who was called into the fast-moving world of sevens for his first IRB World Series tournaments in Wellington, Las Vegas, Adelaide, where he scored a maiden try against the Niue Islands, and Hong Kong.
The versatile Saracens back row, a Number 8 specialist in 15 a side, was part of the wider England Sevens squad in 2006-07 and represented his country at under 16, 18 and 19 levels.
His previous exotic international trip was with the under 19s for the World Cup in South Africa but his rugby roots were at Harrow, a club he joined at the age of five with his sister Clare. Les Simpson, a coach there, helped to shape his future.
Onward to Watford Grammar School, where coach John Williams successfully encouraged him to play at centre to broaden his skills and then to University College, London to read for a degree in Anthropology.
Having completed his studies, Watford-born Don concentrated on his rugby, had a loan spell with Esher and graduated from Saracens Academy to the first team squad in 2008-09.
His Guinness Premiership debut had been in March 2006 against Worcester Warriors and by the end of 2009-10, he had made 21 appearances in the competition and scored a crucial maiden try that beat Bath 20-16 in the final minute at Vicarage Road last March.
His most memorable match dates back to his schooldays. Don said: "We were rank outsiders against RGS High Wycombe but beat them. For me, Richard Hill (the former Saracens and England back row) was the ultimate rugby player and has mentored me for a few years." As a role model, he could have none better.
