Profile

After becoming the British Judo U15/U90kg champion in 2008 and being briefly involved with the England Judo squad, Harry Rudkin opted to focus on rugby. He had played the game at Derby RFC from the age of eight and is now studying A-levels in PE, biology and business at Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth I College and for an AASE with Leicester Tigers.

Before that, he was at Derby-based Landau Forte College, who he captained. He has played for NLD U14-U16 and England Academies U17, having been with the Derby club from 2000-10. When first playing he figured on the wing as the smallest member of the team. He has since moved to the back row and on to the front row a few years ago. Tigers' Marcos Ayerza is the prop he most admires.

Born in Mansfield, Harry has benefited from the influence of his father Gary, who wore Nottingham’s colours in the early 1980s and is now an RFU Community Coach. Sam Roome and Glenn Martin guided him in the Derby mini-junior section and Neil McCarthy, Tosh Askew and Kev Mannion do so nowadays at the Tigers Academy.

His academy debut was against the Scarlets last season. He said: “I was very nervous but didn’t do too badly!” Harry’s England U18 debut followed off the bench for Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi in the 18-16 win over France at Fylde in late February this year, started against Scotland at Hawick and took his consecutive appearances for five by playing in all three matches as England lifted the FIRA/AER European Championship title in Madrid in April.
