When Danielle Waterman first pulled on an England jersey she became her country’s youngest player at the time. Danielle has since scored 32 tries, including last year’s one against Wales, two against Italy and another two against Scotland in 49 Test matches. She has played at scrum half, wing and full back, where she started two pool games and the semi final and final during the 2010 WRWC.
Her two scintillating tries in the 37-10 win over the USA that helped to take England into the semi finals will become part of the game’s folklore. She deservedly became Sky Sports HD Woman of the Match.
Nicknamed Nolli, Danielle currently appears in the position that her father Jim occupied in 400-plus senior matches for Bath Rugby. She said: “He has been my coach and mentor throughout my whole playing career.” The game is distinctly in the family with her brothers Sam and Joe both playing county rugby at age group and senior level.
Taunton-born Nolli is now an AASE talent development officer for the RFUW at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire. She was educated at West Somerset Community College and Oldfield Sports College and went on to attain a BA (Hons) in Leisure & Sports Management.
After appearing for Clifton from 2003-08 and Blaydon in 2008-09, she joined Worcester but her playing days had began with Minehead Barbarians when she was four. She first figured for the England Academy in 2000 and was an A team player from 2002-04.
Danielle has represented England at Sevens, picking up an award for England’s Most Promising Player in 2006 and was twice nominated for major accolades in 2010 – the IRB Player of the Year and the IRPA Try of the Year.
She also has an impressive record of captaincy, leading South West U16 and U18, Clifton Ladies, England Sevens and A team. Before the 2010 World Cup final took centre stage in her career, the Amsterdam Sevens in 2008 was her stand out memory. She said: “We beat New Zealand in the final. It was the first tournament we had played together and came just before the Sevens World Cup.”
Susie Appleby, her coach at college and fellow player when at Clifton, has had a strong influence on her career and she admires Martin Johnson, the former England Team Manager, not only for his playing ability but for his captaincy, too. Jonny Wilkinson and Shane Williams are also on her ‘rated most highly’ list.
