A late starter at the age of 19, Georgina Roberts began playing rugby at Bath University only because she missed her flight to a skeleton bobsleigh competition in Holland. Bradford-born, she works as an analytical chemist for Reckitt Benckiser in Peterlee County Durham, having been educated in Yorkshire at St Barnabus First School in Heaton, Nab Wood Middle School, Shipley and Beckfoot School, Bingley.
From there Georgina went to Bath University where she obtained a BSc in Natural Sciences and then to Teesside University to add to her qualifications with the MSc in Forensic Science. Before joining Darlington Mowden Park Sharks, she played for Avon RFC (2003-06).
She has valued the coaching guidance of Kate Eddy at Bath University and Chris Coombs at Avon that helped her along the representative path to appearances for England Students, whom she captained, Academy, England A, Sevens and senior caps. Her Test debut was against Scotland in 2008. Georgina was the Sharks Back of the Year in 2009-10 and last May helped England A to win the European Trophy in Spain.
Bigger things were to follow when she celebrated her tenth full cap with a jubilant ninth minute try from a pass by Rachael Burford in the 21-7 victory over New Zealand in the second Test at Esher in late November 2011. She then shared in England’s 47-0 win over Scotland in the opening match of the 2012 RBS 6 Nations Championship at Lasswade RFC in February.
Her other sporting achievements include playing volleyball for England Juniors, representing Yorkshire and the North of England at athletics and Great Britain at bobsleigh. Brother Greg played rugby league for Bradford Northern Academy, now Bradford Bulls, and Dad Graham figured in the 13-a-side game for Great Britain Universities in the 1970s.
Georgina’s hobbies are science, crabbing and learning how things work and her most memorable rugby match was the European Championships final against France in Madrid four years ago. Brian O’Driscoll, Jason Robinson are her favourite players and Yiewsley Drive, home of the Sharks, is the ground she likes most.
