As a newcomer to the England Elite squad, Harriet Millar-Mills has much to anticipate. Born in Stockport, she is studying Sports Technology at Loughborough University, having been previously educated at Hursthead Primary in Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall High School.
Her first experience of senior international rugby was in the uncapped match against France in Marseille on November 2 2011. She moved to lock from Number 8, a position in which she had captained England U20s.
Three days later, Harriet was among five new caps when England lost 16-15 to France at Châteaurenaud. She played off the bench for Rowena Burnfield for the final eight minutes and made her first Test start when her side overpowered Scotland by scoring 47 points without reply in the opening RBS 6 Nations Championship match in February 2012.
In May, she shared in the opening victory by 61-0 over Spain in the FIRA-AER European Cup and was a try-scorer when also starting the second match when Italy were beaten 32-8 in Rovereto, Italy and helped the side to beat France 29-25 in the final.
Her rise to national recognition stems from club days with Manchester, followed by Chester (2004-2006), Sandbach (2006-2007) and Lichfield, whom she joined in September 2009. She has made nine appearances for England U20s, having captained North West U18.
Harriet said: “My dad Paul is my ‘head supporter’. My sister Bridget plays for the North and Elliot, my brother, is with London Scottish, appeared for Cheshire U20 and also represented Wales at sailing.”
She began playing at full back and wing, switched to centre and now figures in the back row. Harriet continued: “My most memorable match so far was my England U20s debut in France. It was all the more exciting because I had not previously played in front of such a large crowd. My very first game for Manchester U10 against Macclesfield was also special.”
Harriet’s favourite players past and present are back row forwards Lawrence Dallaglio and Imanol Harinordoquy, her top grounds are Twickenham and Old Trafford and beyond the touchline, she enjoys skiing, sailing and wakeboarding. Back in 2007, she won the Stockport Secondary Schools Sports Personality of the Year award.
