Profile

Becoming the Combined Services Sportswoman of the Year testifies to the excellence of Jane Leonard, a Corporal in the Army (Royal Engineers) based at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire. She received the award from HRH the Duke of Kent in March 2010, when she was also the British Army Sportswoman of the Year.

Sunderland-born and educated at Whitley Bay HS, she has a BA in Sport Science, alongside eight England caps since first playing the game at the age of 18 at the Thirsk Sharks club. She has appeared for Team Northumbria and Lichfield and since rejoined Wasps, whose colours she wore from 2006-09. Jane won the first of her eight caps so far against Ireland in 2007 and returned to the England Elite squad two seasons ago.

A former captain of the Army and Combined Services’ sides, she toured New Zealand with the Army in 2008, having been to South Africa with the England Development squad five years earlier. She was light middleweight Army boxing champion and her other sports have been hockey for North of England U21 and football at county level.

Drawing and sculpting are Jane’s hobbies and her favourite ground is Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria. Her most memorable match was in 2009 when the British Army side beat the New Zealand Army on their own turf in the final minute.
