Home town club Burton-on-Trent was launch pad for Rose Jay on her way to top level. A former England U20s and England Colleges squad member, Rose began playing when eight at Peel Croft and also appeared for ‘Burfield’, a junior girls cluster team based on Burton and Lichfield.
She went on to Hartpury College, represented English Colleges and became the first female student on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) scheme to be selected to play rugby for her country and also obtained a BTEC National Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence.
Rose is now in her second year of Sport Science studies at Leeds Metropolitan University. She said: “My dad Michael, who played for Sutton Coldfield, has been my coach and biggest supporter ever since I took up the game and Barry Maddocks, my AASE coach at Hartpury, helped with the development of my skills.
“My younger brother William, who’s 16, plays for Burton and my sister Phoebe – she’s 14 – is with Lichfield and has played at divisional level for the Midlands. Emily Scarratt, an England Elite squad member, has really helped me in my first year at university and I have learned a lot from her. She’s a great role model.”
The BUCS final in which Leeds Met beat Exeter 38-5 and Rose scored a try is her best rugby experience so far. She is highly popular at Cooke Fields, the home of Lichfield RFC, not least because she bakes cakes for all the girls on match days!
Though uncapped, she appeared as a second half replacement at scrum half for Natasha Hunt in the 14-5 defeat by France in the non cap match against France at Marseille on November 2 2011.
