Profile

Focusing on the 2013 World Cup Sevens is something that was beyond the imagination of Sonia Green not long ago. She said: “I had sustained a serious injury playing against Canada at Sevens but came back to represent England A and Sevens within nine months of being told I would not play again.”

Sonia started at lock in the 15-a-side game, moved to the back row and produced a resolute performance when captaining England A in their 48-3 defeat by New Zealand at Esher in November 2009. All her attributes were to the fore – proficiency with ball in hand, strong running and rucking with passion.

Essex born, she is a PE teacher at Davenant Foundation School in Loughton but moved last September to the Petchey Academy in Hackney. Sonia is a product of Philip Morant School and Sixth Form College in Colchester and gained a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science at Loughborough University which she attended from 2004-07.

Her first club was Sudbury in Suffolk from 2000-02 after which she joined Saracens. She has also represented England U19s and Academy and captained England Sevens in the European Championship in 2009 and 2010. Sonia was player of the tournament at 2010 Dubai Sevens and has won eight other awards with club and country.

They range from England Sevens Players’ Player in 2007-08 to Saracens Players’ Player last season. She has been inspired by Louise Rickard, the most capped Wales player, who coached her at Sudbury. Sonia said: “She taught me how to train. I see Helen Clayton, of Saracens and England, as my rugby guru.”

Saracens old ground at Bramley Road is Sonia’s favourite venue her most admired players are Amy Garnett and Chris Robshaw. Travelling in her VW Campervan ‘The Pea’ is among hobbies that include music gigs and festivals.
