Samoa produced a performance of power and flair to take the USA Sevens title among the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, the first time the circuit has visited the city.

Led by Mikaele Pesamino’s stunning 11 tries – his 55 points making him the tournament’s leading scorer too – Samoa beat New Zealand 33-12 in the cup final.

Forward Alafoti Fa'osiliva also plundered seven tries as the South Sea Islanders claimed their fourth title in the 11-year history of the series, lifting them up to second in the overall standings, 14 points behind the Kiwis.

It was a second successive cup final for Samoa, who saw off a spirited Australia 14-12 in the semi-finals, while consistent New Zealand advanced to their third final this season by defeating Kenya 21-7 in the other semi.

As the series reaches the half way stage with four events played, Fiji drop down to third after losing to South Africa in the plate final.

South Africa’s 12 point return represents their best performance so far, as the current HSBC Sevens World Series champions have failed to reproduce last season’s form.

England suffered sudden-death heartache in Vegas as Benedict Nyambu’s try in extra time gave Kenya a 26-21 victory.

Ben Ryan’s side could not reproduce their form from day one, when two wins and a draw in tough pool saw them top the table.

After the harsh defeat to Kenya, England were visibly deflated and South Africa took full advantage to win 27-14 in the plate semi final.

England star Ben Gollings – the highest points scorer in HSBC Sevens World Series history with 2,229 – was at his customary best with four tries and 42 points.

He also leads the points tally for this season so far with 187 in four events.
