Following promotion runs and a groundbreaking deal to acquire the 25,000-seater Darlington Arena, ambitious club Darlington Mowden Park RFC have an opening for a Community & Fundraising Manager. The exciting post will be a key part of the club's growing off-field team. Revival of what is now the largest rugby-specific venue aside from Twickenham Stadium, alongside the club’s broad strategic plans, represents an opportunity for the correct candidate to become part of one of the most exciting and pioneering sports ventures in the UK.

Job description:

In the short term, as manager of Mowden Park’s current community scheme you will lead on the continued and rapid developments that stretch across core multi-sport delivery, non-core activities and fundraising programmes.

Upon formation of the Mowden Park Foundation in coming months, you will be accountable for all operational delivery, growth and targets within the charities strategy as outlined by the Trustees.

Mowden Park has outlined a provisional Foundation aim of:

“To create a lasting legacy for sport, education, health and social cohesion across Darlington and surrounding areas. The Foundation will directly utilise the Mowden brand, players, volunteers and professional staff, as well as key local and national partners, to engage a wide range of people, empowering them to live an active, healthy and rewarding lifestyle through the medium of sport, the arena facilities and its events.”

Job responsibilities:

  • To be the strategic lead, assisting to develop a vision alongside the Trustees, and being responsible for driving the business plan to execute this vision
  • To build, develop and manage all projects and initiatives in a cohesive approach that engages key partners and stakeholders for long term sustainability
  • To analyse and understand local needs and opportunities thereby delivering impactful projects and initiatives
  • To develop and deliver a coherent fundraising strategy for the charity, including identifying and building successful applications for external funding opportunities
  • To maximise income from major donors and private sector partners through inspiring and engaging communication, presentations and reports
  • To develop and deliver projects and initiatives that provide value opportunity for partnerships and CSR
  • To recruit, inspire, manage, train and support delivery staff on the ground where necessary, ensuring that projects and initiatives realise their objectives in a timely and well-executed manner
  • To monitor and evaluate the success of projects and initiatives in appropriate formats and to present and review this information with key stakeholders for value and sustainability purposes
  • To coordinate delivery of a planned calendar of events
  • To develop an effective communications plan to share information with partners, media and the public
  • To link sustainability, pathways and exits throughout all projects and initiatives and to engage the correct partners to complement this goal
  • To manage the budget (including all externally funded projects)
  • To ensure all performance management is completed including appraisals with all relevant staff

Candidate specification

Experience relevant to post:

  • Both delivery and management experience within community activity projects and initiatives
  • Understanding and/or experience of the charity sector
  • Track record of delivering a range of successful fundraising applications and/or activities
  • Proven success of delivering income from donor and/or private sector companies
  • Experience of developing media and public communication campaigns 
  • Experience of working alongside partner organisations from both the public and private sector
  • Experience of building community strategies and budget management

Knowledge relevant to job:

  • How sport can be used as a vehicle for long-term social change
  • Ability to write concisely and persuasively
  • Local, regional and national sporting partners and programmes 

Education and training:

  • Educated to graduate level or equivalent

Personal competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to cooperate within a team and work independently
  • Good communicator and facilitator with excellent presentation skills
  • Lead and build effective working relationships
  • Good time management, organisational and problem solving skills
  • Research and prospect development skills
