The Metropolitan Police Chigwell RFC was founded in 1943 and orginally played its matches at a Police Sports Club in Leyton. This ground was sold in the late 1940's and the club moved to its new premises as part of the Met Police Sports Clubs at Chigwell Hall. Chigwell. The club has had a long history, associated with Essex and Eastern Counties Rugby.
Unfortunatly with the onset of leagues, reductions in manpower and a lack of enthusiasm to support sport from a management perspective, Police Rugby dwindled. Shift work and having to work ever increasing number of Satrudays also contributed to the playing strengths and eventually from having four sides in the early 1960's we were only able to get just a bare 15 out on some Saturdays. Long travelling distances were not condusive to early turn, late turn and night duty and eventually the club had to withdraw from the leagues and players drifted away.
It is still dificult to get players released from duty to play regular fixtures but the occassional game has been played and there is still hope for the revival of the club with an upturn in recruitment. We shall definatly give it another go and the club lives on.
