Devonport Services 18 - 19 Camborne RFC
With 30 minutes to go the Cherry & Whites trailed Services 18 - 3 and it looked to be a lost cause, but the never say die attitude Town are showing this season saw them come through to to claim the win. There were very good performances from young Manna who was replacing Parma at full back and Rapson at scrum half, who never stop pressurising his opposite number and made some good breaks. Man of the match for Town had to be David Mankee who scored all the points including a well taken try which came from a fine break and chip ahead from Manna. The try took the score to 18 - 17 and left Mankee with a difficult touchline conversion to put Camborne ahead for the first time in the match, he duly knocked it over and with only a few minutes remaining and Town hung on for a deserved win.

Manna drives through with support Town competed well in the lineouts The winning kick goes over
The game was fairly evenly contested for the first quarter with neither side being able to finish off promising moves, but Services took advantage of two penalties in as many minutes to lead 6 -0 after 22 minutes. Town then got onto the scoreboard with a well taken Mankee penalty after 31 minutes and the 6 - 3 scorline was a fair reflection on how Devonport had just edged the game. Then Devonport hit Town with a double blow, a try 4 minutes into injury time (not converted) at the end of the first half and another one two minutes into the second half after poor defending by the Cherry & Whites. The try was converted and Services now had a 18 - 3 lead and Town looked down and out of the match, but with their backs to the wall Town started to play their best rugby of the game and all the team were giving 100%.
On 50 minutes Mankee pulled 3 points back as Town as Camborne started putting Services under pressure, then came another setback as Cameron Bone was Yellow carded for going off his feet in the ruck. With Town down to 14 the players still refused to give up and a few minutes later Mankee struck again to take the score to 18 - 9 and put some doubts in the Service minds. Town were now in the ascendancy and further pressure lead to another chance for Mankee who kept his cool taking the score now to 18 - 12 with less than 10 minutes to go.
Even after the late converted try their was more drama to come, a moments indiscretion from Mankee saw him receive a yellow card and Town were back to 14 players again for the last few minutes, but they were in no mood to give up the result they had worked so hard to acheive and held on.

Another good lineout ball under floodlights Town defend the last attack from Services
This is the first away league win outside the county Camborne have had in two seasons and the players and coaches were rightly delighted, not only with the result but the manner of the performance which showed much charactor and determination. Chairman Alan Truscott said this result will be the catalist to better things, confidence among the team is high and after suffering 4 narrow defeats the team knew that the results would come. Next week we have club captain Martin Woolcock back and the should strengthen the pack and even though we still have a couple of players sidelined we have strength in depth in the squad to cope.

EDF Energy 3rd Round Draw (6 wins away from Twicker's)
The Cherry & Whites have been given a home draw against Newquay Hornets in the next round of the EDF Senior Vase competition. The two teams could end up playing each other 4 times this season with the league fixtures and the Town playing the winner's the Newquay v Hayle Cornwall cup tie in January. The Hornets are already 1-0 up from our last encounter so Town will be looking to reverse the result at home on the 22nd November and go through to the last 16 of the Southwest group.

The team's line up for a minute's silence for vice president Jack Rule who sadly passed away last Wednesday
Camborne 3
Wadebridge 12
Camborne suffered a 2nd successive home League reverse in an error strewn encounter at a windswept Recreation Ground.
Given first use of wind and slope advantage ‘Town’ will reflect on a failure to capitalise on some good periods of pressure in the opening exchanges and thereafter a failure to make any real inroads with the exception of a couple of charges in front of the grandstand prompted by young prop Leigh Hocking.

Hocking on the burst Page takes lineout ball on debut Lee sez "Gotcha"
Joe Parma makes a break Cameron Bone & Ashley Weston under pressure
Forced to reshuffle their forwards due to the absence of experienced forwards Ryan Smith and skipper Martin Woolcock the Cherry & Whites handed a debut to lock Ben Page and the youngster responded well.
A 9th minute searing break by impressive centre Ashley Weston created an opportunity for a simple drop goal by fly half David Mankee for a 3-0 lead.
Soon after on the attack ‘Town’ turned over ball in the tackle and the visitors swept through a disjointed back line for a long range try at the posts easily improved for an unlikely four point lead.
The interval arrived with the score still 3-7, but despite dominating territorially and seeing Camborne reduced to 13 men with a stunned skipper Nigel Endean joining full back Joe Parma in the sin bin, the Camels could not increase their advantage.
Into the final quarter more tenacious home tackling and visiting handling errors combined to restrict the scoring before finally in the closing stages an unconverted try wide out in the scoreboard corner ensured that the Wadebridge supporters went home happy.

Next Match EDF Cup 2nd round.
Crediton 10 - 17 Camborne
The Cherry & Whites came away with the spoils from this closely contested Cup match by virtue of better handling and finishing as the home side failed to capitalise on some good posession. Crediton were certainly up for the challenge and pressurised Town from the start in a first quater which was spent almost entirely in Camborne's half. On 23 minutes Town finally broke the Crediton stranglehold and were able to put a passage of play together which saw them get into the final third of the pitch for the first time. An infringement 30 yards out gave David Mankee the chance to put some points on the board, which he duly did to give Town the lead very much against the run of play.
Rapson sets up a drop goal attempt Making a break from the base of the scrum
Straight from the kick off Crediton again went on the offensive and just as they were looking favourites to score David Mankee intercepted a pass and ran almost 70 yards to touch down, he converted his own try to give Camborne a 10 -0 lead. Crediton by now were kicking themselves as they had already squandered a couple of excellent scoring oppertunities, one of which saw their centre drop the ball with the line at his mercy. They did'nt give up and on 40 minutes Wing Alan Westcott finished off a good handling move to dive over in the corner for a try which was not converted leaving the halftime score at 5 - 10 to Town.

A better showing in the lineout this week Putting pressure on the Crediton line
The second half was a much more even contest which saw Crediton have more of the ball but Camborne create more chances with far better handling than their Devon counterparts. In the 59th minute Adam Notman used his pace and agility to round off another good three quarter move and score a well taken try which Mankee converted to take the score to 5 - 17 in Town's favour. In the last quarter Wayne Reed's side looked to their forwards to take the game to Camborne after their backs had very little joy with Town's well drilled defence. Again Camborne's tackling was superb as they turned over ball several times to thwart the attacking side and make their own counter attacks. Finally on 75 minutes Crediton found a way through and they scampered over for a try in the corner which was not converted, Camborne held on for a victory which had certainly not looked on the cards after the first quarter.
On this performance Town look to have got some of the confidence back which has been lacking in the last few weeks and after winning their first game outside the county for almost 2 years the players are relishing next week's encounter with Wadebridge Camels at the Rec.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
This weekend the Cherry & Whites have a welcome respite from league rugby as they travel to Crediton RFC for their EDF Cup 2nd round fixture. Camborne will be looking to put things right after last Saturday's below par performance at Newquay, the selectors will have a chance to tweak the side with one eye on the following weeks home league match with Wadebridge.
Crediton who play in the Cornwall & Devon league will be no pushovers, just ask Truro who they defeated last weekend 20-13 or Falmouth who they disposed of with ease 39-0 away earlier this season. They have Wayne Reed former Albion and Cornish All Black who has represented the Barbarians on 3 occasions as their player coach this season.
Camborne again would hope to take good support away with them after the large numbers who watched last weekends match at Newquay. Just to remind you seats are available on the team bus and can be secured by contacting Micheal Symons, the price is just £5 and confirmation of leaving time will appear here later in the week. For those of you who prefere to make your own way to the ground there are details on the Travel away with Town page.

Newquay Hornets 22 - 12 Camborne RFC
Camborne went into this fixture with 9 under 19's players in the squad and were unable to contain a Newquay side that showed more belief and desire to win this local derby match. Camborne looked good in spells and led 12-7 early in the second half but never realy threatened after this and a combination of bad decisions and tackling meant they went down to a 3rd straight league defeat.
Camborne slipped to a 3rd successive Western Counties defeat after running out of steam in the 2nd half in the sunshine against the high flying Hornets at the Sports Centre.
Laurie Manna came in for his debut at fullback in place of the injured Joe Parma for ‘Town’ and gave a solid display. Ashley Weston another debutant impressed at centre until he gave way in the 2nd period whilst Chris Pooley was a late replacement at lock for Ryan Smith.
The Cherry & Whites began brightly pinning the homeside in their own half but it was Newquay that took the lead with a try from centre Scott Martin converted by full back Sam Cullen at the end of the 1st quarter.
Some good play by Weston created an opening for his fellow centre Alex Hinds to cross for fly half David Mankee to add the extras and level at 7-7.
Before half time Camborne took the lead for the only time in the game when scrum half James Rapson chipped ahead for speedy wing Adam Notman to gather and outpace the cover for a try wide on the right flank.
The home side dominated the 3rd quarter territorially but could not break down the resolute visiting defence until the 61st minute when fly half Simon Horton went over for Cullen to convert for a narrow 2 point lead.
Five minutes later the score was 19-12 after a third home try touched down in the corner by lock Andy Burbidge.
Down but not out the Cherry & Whites continued to battle but were finally undone near the end by a Cullen penalty that gave the home side the vital two score cushion their domination deserved.

Newquay Hornets v Camborne RFC.
This Saturday the Cherry & Whites will face Newquay Hornets in a league fixture for the first time since the Cornish Merit Table ended 14 seasons ago. This will a tough game for town as the Hornets have made a very good start winning 3 of their 4 games and are in 3rd position in the table. No doubt Kevin Mosley the ex Pirates coach will have prepared his side well for this match and Town will have to work hard to get a result in this local derby.
Camborne expect most of the squad to be fit for this encounter with the exception of Sam Bartle who picked up an injury in last weeks match which will see him out for 3 to 4 weeks. Into the squad comes Mark Tonkin who has impressed in friendly and reserve matches since he joined the club, returning from injury is Lee Pengilly and finaly talented utility back Ashley Weston may also make his 1st team debut. There has been a very good turnout for training again this week and the mood is still extremely positive among the squad and coaches as they bid to get back to winning ways.
After the excellent travelling support Camborne enjoyed at Kingsbridge it is hoped we will be well represented at Newquay, which will mean a lot to the players and give them an extra incentive to do well.
The team will appear here Thursday night after selection.

Camborne RFC 6 - 8 Cullompton
Camborne will reflect on a failure to capitalise on the advantages of both the elements and slope in the 2nd half as they went down by a narrow margin at the Recreation Ground. For the visit of the League leaders veteran Sean Oates was restored to the back row with Ben Cook moving up to lock to cover the unavailable Lee Pengilly.
In deteriorating conditions ‘Town’ went behind to an early penalty but thereafter a combination of good defence and over ambitious handling plays from the visitors ensured no further points were added for a long period. Cullompton did manage the games only try in the 35th minute when with home full back Joe Parma carrying a knock flanker Adam Gingell burst clean through off the side of a ruck 20 metres out to touchdown.
The Cherry & Whites then twice took play deep into the visitors’ territory before half time but crucially could not put points on the board despite good forward pressure. The 2nd period began with the home supporters hopeful even though the dangerous Parma could not restart and was replaced by Christian Barbagallo. ‘Town’s lineout failed to function in the filthy conditions and coupled with a well disciplined Cullompton pick and drive game they could not assert any real domination.
Fly half David Mankee reduced the arrears with a 50th minute angled penalty but soon after he could not find the target from near the same spot. A purposeful Shane Woods thrust down the right flank was the nearest Camborne came to a try but the young winger was adjudged in touch at the scoreboard corner flag. Going into the closing stages Mankee put over his 2nd penalty from near the posts but his drop goal attempt sailing wide in their very next attack was as close as the Cherry & Whites came to snatching victory.

Kingsbridge 16 - 12 Camborne RFC
This was a very disjointed performance from the Cherry & Whites where the scoreline just about reflects the balance of play. Camborne started the match very cautiously and were slow getting to the pace of a game which saw them on the back foot for the first 20 minutes. A little too much respect was paid to the opposition following their large margin of victory last weekend, this resulted in Camborne being 8 - 0 to a 4th minute penalty and a 25th minute unconverted try. Slowly Town clawed their way back into the game and could even have led at the break if the 3 penalty chances they were given had been on target.

A rare first half attack from 'Town' Impressive lineout display from Wooley
Camborne came out in the second half with their ears still ringing from the talking to they received from Brian Andrew who was not impressed with the performance. Worse was still to come when straight from Camborne's kick off Kingsbridge broke through weak defensive tackling from Town and put a 75 yrd move together resulting in a try by the corner flag for a 13 -0 lead. This did seem to instill a little urgency into Camborne's play and the team responded by pressurising the Kingsbridge line for long spells but were kept at bay by some stern tackles.
On 66 minutes, a good passage of play was finished well when Adam Notman followed up his own kick ahead and pounced on a error from the young Kingsbridge centre to hack the ball on and outpace the defence to score by the posts, Mankee added the extra's to make it 13 - 7. Camborne should then have taken advantage of the inexperienced Kingsbridge side who were starting to look disorganised under pressure and argue among themselves. Unfortunately within a few minutes of the re-start a hand in the ruck gave a gift of 3 points away to the opposition and we had lost ground again. Camborne never gave up and constantly pushed forward with some good moves, one of which resulted in a try for Joe Parma on 77 minutes, the resulting conversion was missed and there was not sufficient time to mount another attack.
Camborne were left to look back on a game they had not played well in but still could have taken away something from, if only they had been a little more assertive from the start or had put over a couple of the 5 kicks that were missed.

The Away team sample the delights of another venue, a good turn out for the Cherry & Whites support.

Next stop Kingsbridge
This weekend the young Cherry & Whites face their first away league trip to Kingsbridge in what promises to be a hard match after the Devon side's demolition of Withycombe by 50 - 0 (away) last week. Even at this early stage of the season it's a top of the table clash where our resolve will be severly tested and a win will be important if we are to keep the momentum of the last few weeks going.
Kingbridge also have a very young squad and after reading their website, last weekend's victory in a match they thought would be close, was as big a surprise to them as it was to everyone else. They aim to build on this victory and are confident they can do well against us as they have a good home record. We will be just as determined and a victory for 'Town' would give us a bit of a cushion at the top and do wonders for our morale.
The team could also do with as much support as they can get on these away trips, which after all are not the long journey's we used to undertake when higher up the league structure. There are several seats available on the team coach (which will be leaving approximatly 10.30) at just £5 per head, this is excellent value and we would hope to fill every seat this weekend. If you would like to go just contact Michael Symons who can book a place for you or you could just turn up at the clubhouse by 10.30 o'clock and take a chance. If you prefere to drive you will find details on how to find the ground (and most of the others in our league) on this website, just click on 'Travel away with Town'.

Bude's view on Saturday's game
CAMBORNE 32 BUDE 14
With half the regular side unavailable for a variety of reasons, it was always going to be a big ask against a resurgent Camborne side, keen to make their mark after suffering the ignimony of relegation from South West Two West League at the end of last season. And so it proved, with Town romping to victory at the Recreation Ground last Saturday by five tries, two conversions and a penalty goal to two converted tries.
The first half hour was scoreless as Bude’s young inexperienced pack battled hard under a cloudless sky on a gloriously sunny afternoon. However, after threatening for several minutes, Camborne finally broke the deadlock on 31 minutes, as right wing Shane Woods crossed wide out after a well worked three quarter move, following a line out close to the Seasiders’ line. Fly half David Mankee added the extras for a 7 point lead and five minutes later No 8 Martin Woodcock crashed over from close range after a half break by his scrum half James Rapson, following a scrum in Bude’s 22. This time Mankee was unable to convert, but a 12 point cushion gave the homeside a good base at half time. Bude did have a chance to reduce the deficit on 37 minutes, but Matt Trewin, in the unaccustomed role of fly half, saw his penalty kick drift wide of the upright.
Following the re-start, Camborne were quickly on the attack again and in the 46th minute stretched their lead to 17 points as the Seasiders’ defence was overrun and outside centre Alex Hinds took advantage of a three on one overlap to score in the corner.
With their half backs, Trewin and Ollie Mounce performing manfully against confident opponents and Blaine Wickett a livewire, if unconventional, hooker, Bude finally got their name on the scoresheet with the game approaching the sixty minute mark. A loose high kick was seized upon by Lee Weston in midfield, having switched to the inside centre berch from his starting role on the flank, who linked well with right wing Paul Williams and his inside pass saw the veteran full back Julian Morris cut a fine line to breach the home defence and cross for a well worked and desparately need try. Trewin’s well judged kick added the extras and at 17-7 the Seasiders were back in contention.
However, that optimism was short lived as two tries in as many minutes from left wing Adam Notman and fly half Mankee, the first of which the fly half converted, extended Camborne’s lead to 29-7 and effectively sealed the contest. Bude were not finished yet and following a 73rd minute line out, Lee Weston, at the heart of much of the visitors’ good play, made a delightful half break before feeding his full back Morris who sped through the smallest of gaps to touch down for his second try of the afternoon. Trewin added the simplest of conversions to reduce Camborne’s lead to 29-14, but the homeside had the last laugh as Mankee slotted an 80th minute penalty for a winning margin of 18 points.
Despite the scoreline, Bude can take heart from this game as their young side stood up well to the challenge in difficult circumstances and with many of the old guard poised to return to action, the Seasiders can look forward with cautious optimism to the long season ahead, even though they sit at the foot of the table at present. Ivybridge are the visitors to Bencoolen Meadow this Saturday for the annual Vice-Presidents day fixture, which, hopefully, will see Bude break their duck.
Scorers: Camborne - Shane Woods, Martin Woodcock, Alex Hinds, Adam Notman (Tries), David Mankee (Try, 2 Conversions and Penalty goal). Bude – Julian Morris (2 Tries), Matt Trewin (2 Conversions).

Camborne RFC 32 - 14 Bude

Another good performance from the young Cherry & Whites with a convincing win over their Cornish rivals which saw them score 5 tries.

Bude secure good lineout ball Camborne mount another first half attack
After a minutes silence to mark the passing Mrs Isobel Fleet a long time vice president of the Cherry & Whites who was a regular at most of our home games Camborne completed back to back home Western Counties victories. Taking advantage of the glorious conditions to run in five well taken tries against a spirited Bude side. David Mankee playing at fly half proved to be the match winner for ‘Town’ finishing with a total of 17 points courtesy of a brace of tries, two conversions and a penalty goal.
Play was dour for the first half hour with neither side really threatening until the Cherry & Whites came alive in the 32nd minute. Centre Alex Hinds who had a fine game timed a pass perfectly to left wing Shane Woods and the youngster scythed through the visiting cover for a first senior try. Mankee converted for a 7-0 lead.
As the interval neared young scrum half James Rapson sniped down the blindside of a close range scrum and under a heavy tackle still slipped the ball to skipper Martin Woolcock for the No 8 to crash over wide out.
Twelve points up and now playing down the slope the home side began the 2nd period with a well worked 3rd try. After several scrums near the Bude line the ball was moved right to full back Joe Parma and when he was halted he found Mankee who squeezed in near the flag in the scoreboard corner. The same player’s fine conversion attempt came back off a post. The visitors to their credit then took the game to Camborne and finally grabbed some reward with a converted 59th minute try.
The Cherry & Whites response was almost immediate with Parma chipping the last defender for flying right wing Adam Notman to race onto the ball, gather and dive over leaving Mankee to convert for a 24-7 scoreline.
Minutes later ‘Town’ went out of sight when the elusive Parma beat several defenders on a dazzling run in front of the grandstand before passing on to Mankee who showed the cover defence a clean pair of heels to touch down. Once again Mankee hit the post with the conversion from the touchline.
Going into the closing stages full back Julian Morris bagged his 2nd try for Bude again converted by fly half Matt Trewin but near the end fly half Mankee gave the result an even more convincing look with a penalty from a wide angle.

After last Saturday's superb display against Withycombe you can be sure the players will be up for the visit of Bude in the first ever league meeting between the teams. Like last weeks opposition Bude have a big experienced pack which includes a couple of ex Cornish All Blacks so they will certainly be a challenge for our young forwards. The confidence in the squad is very high with several players showing maturity beyond their years and all are now demonstrating the skills to match the passion and commitment they have always had.
The match will be Sponsored by the Lowenac Hotel Camborne where you can have an excellent meal after the game, many thanks to Martin Faulkner for his generous support.

Camborne 35 - 31 Withycombe

Camborne in Defence About to clear the lines Setting up "strets" for a Score by the posts
Camborne began life back in Western Counties with a thrilling victory in glorious sunshine at the Recreation Ground.
‘Town’ gave debuts to three Colts players in wing Shane Woods, scrum half James Rapson and prop Lee Hocking and they and a host of other youngsters responded with an excellent first half showing to sweep to a 24-5 lead.
With veteran flanker Sean Oates leading by example the Cherry & White pack were more than a match for much bigger and heavier opponents.
Fly half David Mankee slotted an early 30 metre penalty to settle the home side and after an even period the first try followed on 17 minutes. Full back Joe Parma collected a high kick before setting off on a scorching run up the left flank and when his passage was blocked he turned a pass inside to skipper Martin Woolcock for the No 8 to sell a dummy and romp full 25 metres to the goal line. Mankee’s well judged conversion on the angle made the score 10-0.
Another Parma counter attack almost ended with a try for elusive young right wing Adam Notman as Camborne kept Withycombe comfortably at bay for long periods.
As the interval neared Mankee drifted left from a close range scrum and with a weighted pass sent centre Alex Hinds surging through the defence to touch down near the posts. The fly half duly converted for a 17 point advantage.
Soon after Hinds intercepted in the scoreboard corner and launched a stunning length of the field handling move that saw Woods make good ground before passing inside to Rapson who fed on to Notman who gleefully went over under the crossbar.
Mankee’s conversion was a formality but there was time before the break for the visitors to open their account with an unconverted corner try.
Withycombe dominated the early 2nd half exchanges and deservedly reduced the arrears to 24-12 with a 47th minute try converted by fly half Ben Scott.
‘Town’ reacted positively to this wake up call with a Mankee penalty stretching the lead before the same player broke from deep then chipped the last defender for the fast advancing Parma to easily win the race to the touch down in the in goal area.
Trailing by 20 points the visitors would not lie down and when prop Dave Wellbeloved burrowed over for a seven pointer on the hour there remained a glimmer of hope.
With the home side over elaborating a little Withycombe capitalised again with a 64th minute turnstile corner try for a 32-24 scoreline.
Going into stoppage time Scott rounded off a long range handling movement and added the conversion to almost unbelievably reduce the deficit to only a single point.
As the tension mounted Woods made a crunching tackle before Mankee who had enjoyed a good day at the office landed a monster penalty goal to seal a deserved but hard earned victory.
