The Bees poor recent form continued with this home loss against Bedford Blues at Sharmans Cross.
Ali Hepher kicked the Blues ahead in the opening minute with a penalty goal but five minute later and the home side were ahead with scrum half Paul Knight crossing the Bedford line and Tim Walsh converted and added a penalty goal 10 minutes later. Hepher kicked a second penalty goal and with replacement wing Spencer Brown crossing in the 26th minute and Hepher converted to put the visitors 13-10 ahead. Walsh levelled before the break with his second penalty goal.
Hepher kicked the visitors ahead again early in the half but 11 minutes into the second half full back David Knight went in for a try and the Bees were 18-13 ahead.
After that though the Blues took control and scored 13 unanswered points with full back James Hinkins scoring the second Bedford try Hepher converted and slotted over a couple of penalty goals to take the victory.
Coventry 27 (Tries: Davies 2, Fifita, Rheeders. Cons: Davies 2. Pen: Davies.)
Exeter Chiefs 22 (Tries: Murdoch, Thomas, Ross. Cons: Yapp, Kingdom. Pen: Yapp.)
Coventry continue their good recent form with this win over second place Exeter Chiefs.
Coventry were quick off the mark and centre Pila Fifita went over the Cheifs line and Richard Davies converted. Full back Davies then bagged a brace of tries and all of a sudden the home side were 17-0 ahead with half an hour gone. Davies added a penalty goal in the 35th minute and the home side went in 22-0 ahead.
Exeter were on the scoreboard with left wing Alistair Murdoch scoring a try and Tony Yapp converted. Coventry responded immediately with No 8 Hendry Rheeders going in for the fourth try and a 20 point lead.
Exeter came back at the home side with Yapp slotting over a penalty goal and tries from scrum half Hayden Thomas and second row Nathan Ross but ran out of time as Coventry took the win and Exeter’s remote hopes of catching Bristol disappeared.
London Welsh 20 (Tries: Hannon, Woods. Cons: Pugh 2. Pens: Pugh 2.)
Otley 14 (Try: Sovatabua. Pens: Binns 3.)
A home victory over Otley was just what London Welsh needed to pull away form Henley Hawks in the battle to avoid the drop into National Two.
The Welsh were over the Otley try line in the second minute when prop Colm Hannon went over for a try and Dylan Pugh converted for 7-0. Five minute later and Otley were off the mark with wing Waisale Sovatabua crossing the Welsh line for an unconverted try. Pugh kicked a penalty for the home side and when flanker Richard Wood went in for a 21st minute try the home side were 17-5 ahead.
Before half time the visitors were back in the game with Binns putting over a couple of penalties to trail 17-11 at the break.
On the hour mark Pugh kicked a second penalty goal to open up a two score lead again.
Binns did pull three points back with a third penalty goal in the 65th minute in the last score of the match.
Orrell 5 (Try: Spragg.)
Bristol Shoguns 53 (Tries: Marsden 4, Stortoni 2, Contepomi, Clark, Hobson. Cons: Strange 3, Gray..)
Bristol were confirmed Champions with this win and Exeter Chiefs losing at Coventry although Exeter can match Bristol’s points total of 101 points they cannot match their number of wins so the title is decided.
The Shoguns ran in nine tries in this thrashing of bottom of the table Orrell with wing Sean Marsden leading the way with a four try haul. That took him to 21 for the season three clear of his nearest rival in the battle to finish top try scorer in the Division.
They scored four tries in the first half to lead 26-5 and then added five more in the second half with replacement front rowers Neil Clark and Jason Hobson getting on the scoresheet.
Plymouth Albion 37 (Tries: Robinson 2, Shelbourne, Pritchard, Ward Smith. Cons: Pritchard 3. Pens: Pritchard 2.)
Henley Hawks 25 (Tries: Bellinger, Jones, James. Cons: Honeyben 2. Pens: Honeyben 2.)
Albion took the lead in the 2nd minute when James Pritchard slotting over a penalty goal. Five minutes later and the Hawks were ahead with full back Stuart Bellinger going over for a try and Matt Honeyben converted. A two try burst from winger Lee Robinson saw Albion take the lead and with Pritchard converting one of them to go 15-7 ahead after 20 minutes.
Honeyben and Prichard exchanged penalty goals but in the 36th minute Albion scrum half Bryan Shelbourne went over for a try and Pritchard converted for a 25-10 half time lead. Honeyben pulled three points back early in the second half before Pritchard went in for a try for 30-13. Flanker James Jones got another try for the visitors and with Honeyben converting they were 10 points adrift.
Both sides managed another try each in the final couple of minutes as the Hawks left with nothing whilst London Welsh took the win against Otley and that leaves Henley in a bad position with two games left.
Rotherham 25 (Tries: Strettle 3. Cons: Benson 2. Pens: Benson 2.)
Penzance & Newlyn 34 (Tries: James, Motusaga, Ma’asi, Cowley. Cons: Jarvis 4. Pens: Jarvis 2.)
This was a tight match which could have gone either way with the Pirates not sure of victory till a converted try in the sixth minute of injury time.
Rotherham were ahead when Jon Benson converted an early penalty chance. Pirates centre Kevin James went over for the games first try in the 20th minute and Lee Jarvis converted for 7-3. The lead lasted just two minutes with wing Dave Strettle going in for a try and Benson converted for 10-7. Jarvis and Benson exchanged penalty goals but in injury time the visitors took the lead with flanker Iva Motusaga going over and Jarvis converted for a 17-13 lead.
Seven minutes into the second half and the Pirates went further ahead with a try from hooker Viliami Ma’asi and Jarvis was again on target. Strettle pulled a try back for the home side on the hour mark but two minutes later Jarvis put over a penalty goal for the visitors. Strettle completed his hat trck on 64 minutes and with Benson converting it was a two point game with Penzance 27-25 ahead.
The match was wrapped up when replacement back row man Tim Cowley went over for an 86th minute try which was again converted as Jarvis made it six kicks out of six for the afternoon.

Nottingham 11 (Try: Lloyd. Pens: Stenhouse 2.)
Nottingham guaranteed their National One survival with this win over Sedgley Park.
Neil Stenhouse kicked two first half penalties to give the Nottingham side a 6-0 half time lead. They got the only try of the match in the 58th minute when flanker Richard Lloyd went in for his 12th try of the season. |
