In at the Corner - Powergen North One

Check out all the weekend action.

Chester 26 (Tries: Tenant, Parsley, Brooks, Lyle. Cons: Verbickas 3.)

Sheffield 14 (Tries: Burgess, Cox. Cons: Burgess 2.)

Chester got the win they needed but have too many points to make up to be able to claim a play off place after this home success over bottom of the table Sheffield.

It was Sheffield who went ahead with Burgess going over for a 3rd minute try which he also converted for a 7-0 lead. It took Chester just three minutes to draw level with Tenant going over for a try and Simon Verbickas converted. The home side moved ahead on 15 minutes when Neil Parsley went in for a try and again Verbickas converted. Sheffield though levelled on the half hour mark when Cox went in for a score and Burgess again converted for 14 all.

Two tries in the opening 13 minutes of the second half saw Chester pull clear as they went into a 26-14 lead with wingers Ian Brooks and Jim Lyle touching down and Verbickas adding a conversion. That was the end of the scoring with the final 26 minutes scoreless.

Hull Ionians 30 (Tries: Acton 2, Cahill, Pease. Cons: Jasnikowski 2. Pens: Jasnikowski 2.)

Morley 5 (Try: Karl Bradshaw.)

Hull Ionians stay favourites for the play off spot with this win over Intermediate Cup finalists Morley. They are two points clear of the chasing group and have a superior point’s difference so a win in their final match at already relegated Liverpool St Helens will see them home.

It was Morley who took the lead with a 10th minute try from wing Karl Bradshaw which went unconverted.

It took Ionians till the 33rd minute to get on the scoreboard with full back Mark Jasnikowski slotting over a penalty goal and five minutes later they took the lead with No 8 Garry Acton touching down for an unconverted try and a 8-5 half time lead.

Early in the second half Jasnikowski added another penalty goal which was followed on 54 minutes by Acton getting his second try for a 16-5 lead.

Prop Mark Cahill went over in the 69th minute and this time Jasnikowski converted before he converted the final score as left wing Mark Pease went in for the 4th home try of the afternoon.

Middlesbrough 34 (Tries: Poole, Little, Bradford, Fingland. Cons: Moore 4. Pens: Moore 2.)

Liverpool St Helens 5 (Try: Stabler.)

Middlesbrough guaranteed another season of North One rugby with this comprehensive home win over Liverpool St Helens who are relegated.

The home side made the perfect start and were 7-0 ahead in the opening minute with scrum half Alistair Little going over for a try and Simon Moore converted. Moore added penalty goals in the 8th and 16th minutes to see the home side go 13-0 ahead before the visitors got on the scoreboard. It came in the 31st minute with fly half Chris Stabler touching down in what was the final score of the half.

It was not till the hour mark that the home side went further ahead with a try form flanker Ian Bradford which Moore again converted and they were 20-5 ahead.

Two further tries in the next ten minutes saw the home side out of sight flanker Gavin Fingland and wing Danny Poole touching down.

Preston Grasshoppers 18 (Tries: Monaghan, Bailey, O’Toole. Pen: Flynn.)

Hull 13 (Try: Atkinson. Con: Martinson. Pens: Martinson 2.)

Hoppers virtually sealed the Powergen North One title with this home win over promotion chasing rivals Hull. A win in their final two matches will see them home as they have trips to Sheffield and Birkenhead Park to come.

Hoppers were ahead early with centre Paul Bailey going in for a 4th minute try. Hull responded well and went on to go into a 10-5 lead with full back Guy Martinson slotting over a 15th minute penalty goal and he then converted a try from hooker Adam Atkinson in the 27th minute.

Hoppers were level in the 34th minute with full back Gary Monaghan touching down and they took the lead on 40 minutes with a penalty goal form wing Russell Flynn.

In the second half Martinson levelled the scores on 60 minutes with a penalty goal but what turned out to be the winning score came five minutes later. Hoppers got a third try as scrum half Chris O’Toole went in for a try and an 18-13 lead which they kept till the end.

Vale of Lune 23 (Tries: Bryan 2, Sutcliffe. Con: Blackburn. Pens: Blackburn 2.)

Birkenhead Park 26 (Tries: Kennedy 2, Harris, Dodd. Cons: Davis 3.)

Vale are relegated after Saturday’s results as they go down to a narrow home defeat against Birkenhead Park and Middlesbrough are home winners over Liverpool St Helens. Fly half Stuart Blackburn gave then a good start with a 3rd minute penalty goal but the lead lasted just two minutes before full back Ian Kennedy went over for a try. Blackburn kicked a second penalty goal in the 11th minute to put Vale ahead again and when prop Andrew Sutcliffe went in for a try two minutes later they were 11-5 ahead. Centre Steven Dodd got a second Park try in the 23rd minute but just two minutes later Vale were over the Park line with wing John Bryan touching down for 16-10.

Before half time the visitors turned it round to lead 21-16 as Alex Davis kicked a couple of penalty goal and right wing Mark Harris went in for a try.

They extended their lead 21 minutes into the second half with Kennedy getting a second try but seven minutes later Vale were right back in it with Bryan getting a second try and Blackburn converting this time to make it 26-23. That though was how it stayed and Vale were relegated.

West Park St Helens 37 (Tries: Callaghan, Turner, Critchley Bamber, Briers. Cons: Soutar 3. Pens: Soutar 2.)

Altrincham Kersal 14 (Tries: Edwards, Davies. Cons: Wainwright 2.)

West Park still have a very faint chance of making second spot if the result go their way on the final day and they run up a cricket score against Sheffield at Abbeydale.

Park were comfortable home winners over Altrincham Kersal after falling behind to a 10th minute try from full back Paul Edwards which Richard Wainwright converted. Park were on the scoreboard on 18 minutes when centre Ian Callaghan went over on 18 minutes for an unconverted try. They did though take the lead in the 35th minute with Andrew Soutar slotting over a penalty goal. They managed two tries very late in the half to open up a 22-7 lead as full back Mark Turner and prop Ian Critchley touched down and Soutar converted.

They extended their lead in the second half with tries form flanker Paul Bamber and centre Stephen Briers to move into a 34-7 lead. AK pulled seven points back with a try from front row man Aled Davies and again Wainwright was on target. Soutar had the last say with a 70th minute penalty goal.
