NCA AWARDS APRIL 2005
NATIONAL THREE SOUTH
COACH of the MONTH
Eddie Jones – Barking
Three successive wins in the final month sees Eddie Jones again pick up the Coach of the Month award in National Three South. They had away wins at Havant and Weston super Mare and a home success over Westcombe Park.
On hearing of the award Jones commented ‘I accept this award again on behalf of all involved at Barking from all the coaching staff to players. I would also like to mention Dean Cutting who has been a great foil for me, especially when I go off at tangents. We bounce ideas off each other and my success is due in a big way to Dean and his experience’.
Jones took over at Barking in early 2003 after leaving a similar post at Midlands One side Dunstablians which was his first coaching experience.
He moved to England at end of 1996 from New Zealand and went as a full time professional at London Scottish playing 60 times for them as they were promoted to Premiership. Jones then moved to take up a 3 year contract at Leeds Tykes, played 70 times as they too were promoted to Premiership.
PLAYER of the MONTH
Cam Avery – Havant
2nd: Neil Barella (Hertford). 3rd: Jacques Steyn (Barking).
Cam is 24 years of age, and in his 1st season at Havant, and has made a massive impact on National League 3 having scored 23 tries this term.
A powerhouse wingman recruited by DOR Adam King from North Harbour where the Hav have strong links, Cam was a regular in the Takapuna 1st grade side who have dominated the North Harbour premiership over the last 10 years, and played in the premiership final losing to Massey last term. Cam also has provincial honours with North Harbour B in the NPC championships.
DOR Adam King commenting on Cam advised "Cam has shown a tremendous attitude in his season with us, and works extremely hard off the field in his preparation as well as on, and his powerful finishing has made him an instant favourite with the Hooks Lane faithful who will be glad to hear he has decided to remain with the club.
KICKER of the MONTH
Owen Ashton – Haywards Heath
Ian Davies, Director of Rugby at Haywards Heath commented on hearing about the award ‘To score so many points this season in a team that has struggled to collectively score (387) is testimony to his accuracy and consistency.
Owen has also improved his general play to a standard that now has seen him move from last season's bit part player to an important part of the 1st XV.
In a season that was has been very bleak at least the club will have one trophy in the cabinet at the final knockings!!!’ Davies said last time Ashton picked up the award ‘But who knows if Owen keeps up his tremendous post Christmas form then he may pick up another this month or next.’
2nd: Rob Colborne (Tabard). 3rd: Bede Brown (Redruth). (Minimum qualification 10 attempts at goal during the month.) |
