Fylde 17 (Tries: Trend, Newton. Cons: Scott 2. Pen: Scott.).
Macclesfield 32 (Tries: Pearson, Keep, Coulbeck, Muckalt. Cons: Winney 3. Pens: Winney 2.)
An excellent performance from the Blues against Fylde at The Woodlands, eased relegation concerns even more, particularly as a try bonus point was earned as well, meaning that Leicester Lions were pushed into a relegation spot even though they did not play.
The Blues’ back play was better organised than of late resulting in greater penetration in attack and a more secure defensive alignment. The forwards were outstanding, with a solid performance from the front five who created a good platform, whilst the back row had a superb game.
Director of rugby Steve Rule said afterwards: “The score line does not reflect the closeness of the game. It was nip and tuck throughout. We had to work very hard to achieve this victory, but for once this season, we got the bounce of the ball. Our concentration was better, but there are still times when the team switches off for short periods, but if we can go on producing performances like today we will not have any problems staying in the league. I am very proud of the amount of effort and enthusiasm still being shown. It speaks volumes for their commitment at this stage of the season.”
Macclesfield began well and put early pressure on the home side, but good defence from Fylde kept the Blues at bay. The game proceeded with neither side gaining the ascendancy, but Fylde were first to convert a penalty through Mike Scott after twenty five minutes. Then, out of the blue, flanker Nick Pearson dispossessed a Fylde player, then out sprinted some desperate defence to cover seventy metres to score Macc’s first try. Ross Winney converted. The contest continued to swing from end to end, but no further score were forthcoming before the break.
In the second half, the Blues gained more ascendancy and after Winney had converted a penalty on fifty minutes, Pearson once again used his speed to create a gap on some fine interpassing resulted in number eight Jonnie Keep forcing his way over and with Winney converting Macc were leading by 17-3.
But Fylde soon replied on sixty four minutes with a try from a catch and drive to close the gap to one score. Then a loose pass from Fylde was booted forward by Ben Coulbeck, and when a kind bounce was gathered by him, there was no catching the flying fullback, who scored under the posts after seventy three minutes. Such was the game, that some three minutes later a quick tap from a penalty, caught the Blues unawares and scrum half Paul Green scampered over to close the gap again.
However a penalty from Winney in the final minutes gave Macc the victory, and then a score from Dave Muckalt after excellent approach work, in added time, proved to be the icing on the cake, with the try bonus point.
Darlington Mowden Park 37 (Tries: Wright, Barker, Atelemo 2, Littlefair. Cons: Breen 2. Pen: Breen.).
Kendal 7 (Try: Mulholland. Con: Woof.).
Michael Breen put the home side ahead in the 5th minute with a penalty goal and when he converted a try from flanker Matthew Wright in the 9th minute the home side were 10-0 ahead.
Wings Matt Barker and Aloisio Atelemo both went in for tries before half time as the home side went in 20-0 ahead.
Atelemo got a second try on 57 minutes as the home side claimed a valuable four try bonus point which could prove vital in the end of the season.
The visitors finally managed to cross the home line on the hour mark with fly half Simon Mulholland going over and Nathan Woof converted. The home side managed to score two more tries and run out comfortable winners and move out of the bottom three with Leicester Lions finding themselves in the bottom three for the first time this season. |
