Report courtesy of Esher:
Esher won this high scoring match and took all five points but remain seven points behind Waterloo who also picked up a four try bonus point on the road at Blackheath.
This was a must win game for Esher if they were to put any pressure on the top two. A win was what they got in this thrilling encounter.
Esher opened the scoring after only 4 minutes, when a trademark driving maul sent the Manchurians reeling back some 35 yards and over their goal line, the try being secured by No 6 Mike Blakeburn. Neil Hallett added the extra two.
Manchester were in no mood to sit down, and the next 20 minutes saw them dominate, in the 12th minute they pulled one score back through centre Craig Cooper, Andre Wilson converting. (7-7).
Esher’s defence was being put to the sword, but they were holding out. On 32 minutes a wild pass by the Manchester back line was intercepted by the leagues top try scorer Matt Moore, who with ball in hand was unstoppable over the 45 yard chase for the line, Hallett converted and Esher regained some control. It was now Manchester who were having to defend as Esher piled on the pressure. On 4o minutes and with the play on the home sides line for as many as 20 phases, Esher managed to break the line through Matt Leek who went in under the posts, Hallett again converted and Esher led 21 points to 7 at half time.
At the restart Esher again took control as another driving maul saw the Manchester side reeling, this time hooker Tom Doran surfaced with the ball and another score for Esher, Hallett adding the extra two.
Manchester then began a fight back and scored three unanswered tries on 46, 52 and 61 minutes, none of which were converted and so pulled the score back to 24-28. Esher needed to dig deep, Hallett replaced Leek at fly half as Leek struggled with a leg injury, Graham Barr moving to full back and Sam Cottrell came onto scrum half. The move worked as from the opening play with this formation Barr scored and unconverted try to give Esher some breathing space at 24 – 33. Manchester responded again through their full back Hannah (29-33). But it was Esher who had the final say as they went for the kill. On 79 minutes the ball went out wide and they should have scored, but from the next play, Lee Starling went over and Hallett converted to secure the win and the valuable 5 points.
