In at the Corner - Powergen South West One

Weston 42 (Tries: Cook 3, Reid, Burge, Denbee. Cons: Lowis 2, Reid. Pens: Reid 2.).

Chippenham 17 (Tries: Warburton, Jones. Cons: Williamson 2. Pen: Williamson.).

Weston have had a shaky couple of weeks with only a draw and a dreadful blip at Oxford to show for their efforts and at half time in this game, Chippenham looked like the side at the top of the table.

The home side was totally out of sorts, spilling passes, missing kicks and turning over possession, and Chippenham, a lively well drilled side which has adapted comfortably to  South West 1, and play a high speed game maximising their opportunities, took advantage of Westons’ ineptitude to dominate the first half.

Two tries were scored. Fullback Warburton entered the line for a simple touchdown under the posts after five minutes and fifteen minutes later, stocky wingman Fereday, who looked dangerous when he could catch the ball, cut a fine line through the Weston midfield to create a simple score for flanker Jones. Both were converted by Williamson, who also added a penalty. Reid replied with one penalty and on the stroke of half time, Denbee escaped to score for the home side, and calm the nerves of the Weston support for a 17-8 scoreline.

The second half brought an about turn. Westons’ scrum turned the screw and totally dominated the visitors who found themselves playing at the wrong end of the pitch with no possession. Five tries were scored without reply. Hooker Burge got his hands on the ball in a driving maul. Fly half Reid made amends for spurning a five man overlap in favour of an optimistic drop goal attempt when he wriggled his way over from 25 metres and  Cook scored a hat trick in fifteen minutes. Admittedly he was the lucky ball carrier on two occasions when the scrum drove over for identical scores but his third was a magnificent effort which resulted from a rare Chippenham visit to the Weston line. Possession was lost and the flanker set off from 80 metres to outpace the cover defence for the third. The traditional jug appeared later that night!

Maidenhead 10 (Tries: Plamus 2.).

Clifton 32 (Tries: Bell 2, James, S Kent. Cons: Barnes 3. Pens: Barnes 2.).

Excellent away win for Clifton over Maidenhead who have a good home record.

John Barnes gave the visitors an early lead with a penalty goal before winger Andy Bell went in for the games opening try and with Barnes converting Clifton were 10-0 ahead after 15 minutes. They got a second try four minutes later when centre Carwyn James went over and Barnes again converted for 17-0.

Just before the half hour mark Barnes kicked a second penalty goal but by half time the home side were on the scoreboard with a try from their full back Joe Plamus and the visitors went in 20-5 ahead.

Barnes missed a couple of early penalty goals in the second half but he was on target soon after converting a try from Sam Kent to make it 27-5.

They got their fourth and final try just after the hour mark ads Bell completed a double the home side did manage another core with Plamus completing a double but the win and the two points went to Clifton.

Oxford Harlequins 10 (Try: Henley. Con: Stoop. Pen: Stoop.).

Chinnor 29 (Tries: Rixon 2, Oxley, Tolich, Immelman. Cons: Buckley 2.).

Chinnor took an early lead with replacement Ed Rixon going over for an unconverted try. It took till the 35th minute for them to add to that with a try from centre Darren Oxley and this time it was converted by Matt Buckley. The home side were on the scoreboard a couple of minutes later when centre Sam Stoop put over a penalty goal but before the break the visitors got a third try with Rixon completing a double and they went in 17-3 ahead.

In the second half they got a fourth try 10 minutes in with right wing Reni Tolich going over and Buckley converted to make it 24-3.

The home side made it over the visitors try line in the 52nd minute with centre Andy Henley going over and Stoop converted.

Chinnor though rounded of the win with their fifth try as hooker Immelman went over in the 66th minute.

Reading Abbey 34 (Tries: Willis 2, Waterhouse, Shaw, Potts. Cons: Shaw 3. Pen: Shaw.).

Cheltenham 13 (Try: Nicholls. Con: Crisp. Pens: Crisp 2.).

Report courtesy of Reading Abbey.

This Powergen South West One match at Rosehill last Saturday had barely begun when a hole measuring some two feet deep and a foot across was discovered in the middle of the pitch. It took a quarter of an hour to fill it in but the interruption did not upset Abbey as skipper James Kindon immediately broke and kicked ahead. Cheltenham cleared short and, from the line-out, prop James Walsh drove and flipped the ball to flanker Steve Willis who crashed over for a fourth-minute try converted by scrum-half Simon Shaw.

But Cheltenham soon showed that they were up for the match, their big pack scrummaging well and winning turnovers while their backs were using the wind sensibly and putting together some good phases. Just before the half-hour they were rewarded with a penalty converted by stand-off Mike Crisp but four minutes later Shaw struck back after Cheltenham were offside following a break by Abbey centre Alex Fairlie.

Cheltenham, who have scored a lot of points this season despite their position at the foot of the table, continued to press but they were forcing the game and home winger Tom Waterhouse intercepted to sprint the 70 metres and score near the posts, Shaw converting. But Abbey were over-confident and some lazy work allowed the visitors to put together a fine series of inter-passes that ended the half with a try for winger Andy Nicholls.

Soon after the re-start lock Duncan Cook’s clean lineout take set up good position. A scrum was awarded near the Cheltenham line and the Abbey pack who had played only in short bursts in the first period took the ball against the head and drove over for Shaw to dive over and then convert his own try.

Cheltenham were not finished yet and despite strong tackles by front-row men Matt Moorhouse and Fungai Mutepfa, a line-out steal by flanker Ben Finnie and then an excellent tackle, turnover and clearance by full-back Glenn Hunt, Abbey were off-side under the posts and Crisp took three points back. His side continued to press but a knock forward denied them until home centre Gareth Priest made two runs, Abbey were given a line-out and the pack mauled forward for lock Tony Potts to break off and touch down.

Shaw and his half-back partner Chris Burch were now using the favourable breeze well and but the fifth and last try came only in injury time, this time in the form of a pushover try claimed by Willis.

This result was important for both sides as it means that with four matches still to play Abbey are mathematically safe from relegation while Cheltenham are probably doomed unless a re-organisation of the league structure comes to their rescue. This Saturday Abbey make the long trip to Penryn who are near the foot of the table. The Rosehill men will be without man of the match and star player Simon Shaw who skippered their promotion side last season but who has now announced his retirement owing to work and family commitments.

Basingstoke 57 (Tries: Lambert 3, Rogers, Fish, Townsend, T Northcote 2. Cons: Humberstone 7. Pen: Humberstone.).

Clevedon 5 (Try: Johns.).

Comprehensive win for Basingstoke running in eight tries including a hat trick for right wing Dave Lambert.

They got off to a great start with two tries in the opening seven minutes to go 14-0 ahead as scrum half Jamie Fish and full back Ollie Rogers went over and Simon Humberstone converted BY half time they had two more and were 31-0 ahead.

Lambert scored all three of his tries in the second half as they continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with four more tries.

Centre Simon Johns scored a consolation for the visitors in the 69th minute.

Spartans 20 (Tries: Myatt, Fitzpatrick, Hunter. Cons: Williams. Pen: Williams.).

Penryn 66 (Tries: Slater 3, Forrest 3, Manns, Webster, Pellow, Peseta. Cons: Pascoe 8.).

13 tries in the match as Penryn run in 10 tries to comfortable defeat Spartans.

At half time they were just 21-10 ahead but took total control in the second half. There were hat tricks for right wing Mike Slater and centre Seddon Forrest, on his debut, as they back dominated the scoring with nine of the ten tries.

Dave Pascoe converted eight of the tries to end the afternoon with 16 points form the boot.
