In at the Corner - Powergen North One

Caldy 22 (Tries: Dom 2, Bansor. Cons: Coast 2. Pen: Coast.).

Huddersfield 13 (Try: Whitehead. Con: Grayshon. Pens: Grayshon 2.).

Saturday’s North 1 game between Caldy and Huddersfield proved to be yet another vital victory for the Wirral side.  They not only secured the two league points but as the majority of rugby games in the North of England were cancelled due to the weather, this is money in the bank for Caldy.  All of the other scheduled games in North 1 were cancelled and although this means that other teams now have a games in hand, it points on the board that matter, particularly as certain clubs now face a gruelling run in.  Caldy have played 18 games and secured 13 points.  Chester and Longton have only played 15 games and with fixtures already re-scheduled for 18th March and 1st April they now face the prospect of playing over Easter or going beyond the final Saturday of the season and playing on 29th April.  This also means that there will be huge pressure on both clubs to play their games. Alternative venues may be sought in the event that their pitches are unfit.  This also puts considerable pressure on players with little respite from one week to the next.  It always seems to be the case that teams at the bottom of the pile have little luck and any injuries picked up by players at this stage will doubtless stretch the meagre resources that some of the sides will have.  For Caldy, this was not only a vital win but a very fine one against a side that, other than table topping Morley, has the best defensive record in the league.  The Yorkshiremen have been in good form of late and had been unbeaten in their previous three games, two of which had been away from home.  This victory for Caldy means that they are now unbeaten in their last four games and should take a degree of confidence into their game this coming Saturday against 3rd placed Altrincham Kersal.  Stelfox Avenue, Altrincham has not proved to be a happy hunting ground for Caldy in their recent encounters and they will be looking to avenge a 3 – 21 defeat earlier in the season at Paton Field.

Huddersfield Kicked off with the snow laden Welsh Hills as a back drop and with a strong wind in their favour.  On 9 minutes Jamie Grayshon opened the scoring for the visitors with a penalty kick.  Marcus Coast had an opportunity to level three minutes later but the penalty kick went wide however, within a couple of minutes John Close made a fine break for the home side, passed inside to fullback Ben Wylie who committed the Huddersfield defender and delivered a fine pass to openside flanker Gareth Bansor to score the opening try.  Coast added the conversion for 7 – 3.  A further penalty on 20 minutes gave Grayshon the opportunity to reduce the arrears and he pounded the kick home.  Caldy still looked dangerous despite the well organised Huddersfield defence but on 26 minutes Liam Devaney cause mayhem for the visitors as he placed a speculative kick ahead into the in goal area.  As they attempted to run the ball out the Caldy men made the telling tackles and scrum half, Ashric Don stole the ball to score.  Coast added the extras for 14 – 6.  Caldy looked comfortable until the 35th minute when a scruffy line out 30 metres from the Caldy line.  Flanker Mark Whitehead picked up the ball and was able to jink through limp tackles to score and Grayshon added the conversion to take his personal league kicking tally to over 100 points.  However, Caldy were able to hang onto their 14 – 13 lead until the interval and this had to be seen and a very good return against the wind.

The second period started with good early play from Caldy as they took up residence in the Huddersfield half of the field.  There was no immediate profit from this possession and indeed Grayshon had a penalty kick against the wind that could have given the visitors the lead after 60 minutes.  Chances came for Caldy to extend with a Coast penalty and a Martin drop goal but both went wide.  There was a lack of invention from Huddersfield and the lack of presence in the Caldy half did not settle the foreboding that this was a side that has pinched a number of games this season with a late score and Caldy for all of their endeavour had not killed the game off.  A turning point came as second row Richard Barker was order from the filed with a red card and Coast added from the resulting penalty for 17 – 13.  At the death Caldy secured another try providing a brace for Ashric Don on the day and the scoreline of 22 – 13 in Caldy’s favour was well deserved.
