Four tries in the third quarter killed the game as the home side went into a 52-14 lead, the final quarter saw Blaydon extend their lead before New Brighton rallied with two late tries.

Glen Boyd gave the visitors the lead with a 4th minute penalty goal. The home side though were in front five minutes later when full back Ben Greaves went over, Tom Rhodes missed the conversion but made it 8-3 with a 20th minute penalty goal. They got a second try in the 26th minute when second row Steven Burns went over and Rhodes converted for 15-3. Boyd kicked a second penalty goal but by half time the Bees had scored two more tries to secure the bonus point and got in 29-6 ahead with tries from wing Joe Simpson and hooker Peter Scott.

Centre Phil Greaves extended their lead on 54 minutes with Rhodes again converting.

The visitors did manage a try when they were awarded a penalty try and Boyd converted in what was the final score of the match after 67 minutes.

The home side did manage a consolation try with right wing Mark Airey going over the DMP line in the 67th minute.

Macclesfield 13 (Try: Knowles. Con: Knowles. Pens: Knowles 2.).

Fylde 26 (Tries: Wiseman, Brennand 2, Waller. Cons: Scott 3.).

Report courtesy of Macclesfield:

With other results in the league going against them, Macclesfield find themselves back in the relegation zone once again, after their defeat at home against Fylde. The remaining six league games are likely to nail biters for all concerned.

Where the Blues had the rub of the green last week, Fylde were in no mood to present Macc  with tries, and pounced on mistakes made by the home team to come out worthy winners. Generally, the Blues’ performance was well below par, and disappointed an expectant crowd, with poor cohesion in the backs, and too much turnover ball when in attacking situations. Presenting the visitors with two tries at the start of each half did not help their cause either, and good aggressive defence from Fylde prevented the Blues from recovering.

A very disappointed Steve Rule said: “We had a disastrous start and struggled to recover. The previous week’s win at Fylde didn’t do any favours for the team’s mindset, but to be fair to Fylde, they were very committed and physical, and deserved their win. Today’s game was almost a complete reversal of last week. It now makes the next game at Leicester, doubly important.”

The Blues could not have started any more disastrously, when, from the kick off the Macc back line attempted to move the ball away from the opposition, but a dropped pass presented the alert Wiseman the opportunity to scoop up the ball and score the try. Scott converted.

Macc recovered their composure and retained some possession, but handling errors spoiled their attacks. But after eleven minutes good pressure forced Fylde to concede a penalty which Joe Knowles converted to open Macc’s account. However, Fylde immediately pressured Macc and only desperate defence held them at bay, but after prop Rob Bieniasz was sin binned for killing the ball on fifteen minutes, the pressure increased even more, and although the pack heroically defended a catch and drive, and forced Fylde into giving away a penalty, it was inevitable that they would eventually make use of their numerical superiority, and when the ball was moved wide, Brennan went in at the corner.

The Blues fought back again and when Knowles converted another penalty and Banks was sin binned, it was to be hoped that they could do the same as Fylde. But, in spite being encamped in the visitors twenty two for a long period, Macc could not break a resolute Fylde defence.

The second half began as the first, when a poorly directed defensive kick was fielded by Scott, who, seeing oceans of space, kicked deep for winger Brennan to chase and outpace the defence to score. Then, with only forty seven minutes gone, another Macc attack came to nothing with a dropped ball, and a grateful Fylde side took possession and broke out with some excellent handling for the supporting Waller to score, and claim the try bonus point. 26-6.

Macc were further upset when  Tony Howcroft was sin binned, more turnovers were presented to Fylde and when they did hold on to possession to put themselves over the try line, the referee brought them back, and then gave them a penalty. More substitutions were made and Paul Bartle and Scott Harrison made an immediate impact with their direct lines of running, and in added time Harrison was able to break through to score his first try for the Blues, but this proved to be too little too late.

Preston Grasshoppers 13 (Tries: McKenna, Podmore. Pen: Bailey.).

Leicester Lions 22 (Tries: Barrett, Watson, Penalty try, Campbell. Con: Lintern.).

Much needed win for the Lions as they moved above Macclesfield and out of the relegation zone.

They were in front early on when prop Keni Barrett went over for an unconverted try. Hoppers responded with a penalty goal from Paul Bailey and just after the half hour mark they went ahead with a try from full back Owen McKenna. Before half time though the visitors took the lead again with a try from second row Gary Watson.

13 minutes into the second half and they went further ahead when the referee awarded them a penalty try and Anthony Lintern on his debut added the conversion.

With the game in its final 10 minute the Lions secured the four try bonus point with centre Rob Campbell crossing.

Hoppers did manage the final score with centre Scott Podmore going in but that was the final score and Leicester picked up five very important points.

Tynedale 14 (Tries: R Herdman, Jupp. Cons: Belgian 2.).

Cleckheaton 7 (Try: Dudley. Con: Gordon.).

Tynedale took the win after a scoreless first half with two tries in the third quarter to go into a 14-0 lead. The tries came from flanker Rob Herdman and prop Duncan Jupp and centre Phil Belgian added the conversions.

Cleckheaton did manage to get a score when second row John Dudley went over for a 60th minute try converted by Iain Gordon in what turned out to be the final score of the match.
