Cheltenham 24 (Tries: Bryan 2, Hanks, Whitney. Cons: Crisp 2.).
Oxford Harlequins 12 (Tries: A Cope, J Cope. Con: Cottinden.).
Cheltenham picked up just their second win of the season with this victory over Oxford Harlequins.
It was the visitors who were first on the 15 minutes with scrum half Anthony Cope touching down for 5-0. By half time the home side were in front with tries from right wing Alan Bryan and centre Mark Whitney with Mike Crisp adding a conversion for 12-5.
12 minutes into the second half the visitors were level with flanker Jamie Cope touching down and Ben Cottinden converting.
Cheltenham with two tries in the final quarter took the win as full back Sam Hanks and wing Bryan, with a second, went over the Oxford Harlequins try line.
Chinnor 28 (Tries: Tolich 3, Thompson. Cons: Buckley 4.).
Basingstoke 8 (Try: Saunders. Pen: Humberstone.).
Chinnor were on the score sheet 2 minutes into the game when after consistently going down the blind-side they created an opportunity for Rewi Tolich to go over almost unopposed to score under the posts. Matt Buckley added the conversion. Basingstoke responded immediately when after a sustained bout of pressure they were awarded a penalty for a Chinnor offside with Simon Humberstone making no mistake with the ensuing kick. Chinnor increased their lead some 5 minutes later when the alert Morgan Thompson exploited a gap to once again go over near the posts. With Buckley again adding the conversion Chinnor had made the most positive of starts. A second Tolich try at the 30th. minute mark with Buckley adding the conversion gave Chinnor an interval advantage of 21pts to 3. With the referee playing the advantage law to good effect the second half flowed from one end to the other. Strong cover tackling by both sides kept the scoreline static. Eventually an error by Humberstone, in the 73rd minute. allowed Hiscock to field a wayward clearance to set up yet another try for the supporting Tolich. Buckley converting. A try by Carl Saunders for Basingstoke, in the 3rd minute of extra time was the final act of the game.
Chippenham 25 (Tries: .).
Maidenhead 39 (Tries: .).
Excellent away win for Maidenhead who close to within two points of fourth placed Basingstoke.
Clevedon 10 (Try: Durant. Con: Hawkes. Pen: Hawkes.).
Weston super Mare 19 (Tries: Burns 2, Sprague. Cons: Reid 2.).
Matches between these two close rivals sides are traditionally scrappy, tightly contested affairs with defences invariably on top and scoring opportunities at a premium, and this was no exception. Clevedon were certainly not going to cave in as they had against Chinnor the week before.
There was a slightly unorthodox “spin” to the game. Weston appeared to have a one man numerical advantage as the diminutive Clevedon No.1 spent the whole game on the visitors side of the rucks and mauls but the referee evened things up when he yellow carded three visiting players at the end of the match, causing Weston to play some seven minutes with twelve players.
Clevedon started the better and should have scored after ten minutes but their right wing dropped a try scoring pass. The visitors came straight back and quick hands saw speedy wingman Burns score in the corner. Try unconverted and Burns scored again two minutes later when a horrible bounce from a clearing kick completely evaded the home full back for
him to gather and run in unopposed from halfway. Try converted for a 12-0 lead.
Hawkes, resplendent in pink and white boots, kicked a penalty to open the scoring for the home side.
The second half remained tight and competitive with Clevedon, to their credit, playing a wide game through their backs and Weston midfield defending well and it was defensive pressure that caused a knock on in the Clevedon midfield allowing Sprague to gather and sprint in from 50 metres. Weston 19…Clevedon 3.
There followed 15 minutes of attritional play with neither side gaining the upper hand and little entertainment….enter the referee who rightfully yellow carded A.Chase, the Weston prop for use of the knee.
Three minutes later he invited McQuaid (harsh) and Lowis (justified) to join their colleague in the sin bin…..Weston 12, Clevedon 15….and this was NOT the scoreline.
Clevedon made the numerical advantage count but once when the visitors finally ran out of defenders and veteran lock Durrant staggered the last ten metres to just about make the line.
Hawkes converted but hereafter, the home side inexplicably started to kick their possession away. Chase returned and it was the Weston 13 who finished the stronger. Three penalties were won in quick succession and although they were all missed, it allowed the clock to run down for the visitors to hold on more comfortably than perhaps they should have.
Clifton 96 (Tries: Viol 2, B Kent 2, Frost 2, Sacco 2, James, S Kent, Blake, Cox, Kempton, Steetskamp. Cons: Barnes 13.).
Spartans 0 (.).
Comprehensive win for Clifton at home to bottom of the table Spartans running in 14 tries.
They took 11 minutes to get over the visitors try line with centre Carwyn James crossing and John Barnes added the conversion. They got another six tries in the first half to go in 49-0 ahead with Barnes converting all seven of them.
They added another seven tries in the second half with Barnes converting six of them.
There were doubles for full back Rob Viol, centre Barnaby Kent, scrum half Daniel Frost and replacement back Ollie Sacco.
Penryn 51 (Tries: Pellow 2, Mann, Webster, Brown, Hughes, Foster, Peseta. Cons: Webb 4. Pen: Webb.).
Reading Abbey 17 (Tries: Moorcroft 2, Willis. Con: Burch.).
Excellent home win for Penryn over Reading Abbey to close within two points of the two sides above them in the league table.
Centre Peter Webster got the games opening try to give the home side a 5-0 lead. Right wing Darren Pellow got the second try five minutes later as they went 12-0 ahead with Lewis Webb converting and then adding a penalty goal for 15-0.
Reading Abbey then got on the scoreboard with No 8 Steve Willis going over. The home side though took full control of the match with three more tries before the break to go 34-5 ahead with Pellow completing a double. Prop Matt Moorcroft went over for the visitors early in the second half but before the hour mark Penryn had scored two more tries and were 46-12 ahead. Both sides scored late tries as Penryn ran out comfortable winners. |
