In at the Corner - National One

Bedford Blues 34 (Tries: Johnson 3, Roberts, Staten. Cons: Hepher 3. Pen: Hepher.). 

Plymouth Albion 28 (Tries: Arscott, Luxton, Sestaret, Thomas. Con: Barnes. Pens: Barnes 2.). 

Bedford Blues pick up all five points with this win over Plymouth Albion but remain 13 points behind the leaders.      

The Blues made a good start and were 12-0 ahead in the opening 12 minutes with tries from hooker Chris Johnson and centre Liam Roberts whilst Ali Hepher added a conversion.

Plymouth responded well and found themselves 17-15 ahead after 34 minutes with two tries in two minutes from second row Brett Luxton and wing Nicolas Sestaret after full back Luke Arscott got them off the mark in the 19th minute.

Just before the break the Blues regained the lead when Johnson went over for a second try and Hepher converted for 22-17.

Ed Barnes pulled three points back for the visitors just after the break but by the end of the third quarter the Blues were in control as Johnson completed a hat trick and wing Mike Staten touched down as they opened up a 34-20 lead.

Flanker Danny Thomas got Albion a bonus point with the fourth try on 73 minutes and Barnes put over a late penalty goal to give them the losing bonus as well.

 

London Welsh 32 (Tries: Swales 2, Storey, Cannon. Cons: Morgan 2, Cannon. Pens: Morgan, Cannon.). 

Coventry 13 (Try: Geraghty. Con: Moore. Pens: Moore 2.). 

The Welsh are up to tenth in the league table after this home win over Coventry.     

The Welsh were quick out of the blocks and went over for the games opening try in the 3rd minute when right wing Gareth Swales touched down and Gareth Morgan converted.

They went further ahead when Morgan put over a 23rd minute penalty goal and when he converted a second Welsh try from centre James Storey the home side were 17-0 ahead after 26 minutes.

Coventry pulled seven points back on the half hour when centre Kieran Geraghty went over and the reliable boot of James Moore added the conversion.

Moore added two more penalties in the first 22 minutes of the second half with Matt Cannon putting one over for the home side with Morgan off the field. 

 The Welsh pulled away when Swales got a second try on 67 minutes and sealed the win when centre Cannon touched down in the 75th minute.

 

Nottingham 35 (Tries: Kay, Corcoran, Logan, Woodrow. Cons: Stenhouse 2, Woodrow. Pens: Stenhouse 2. DG: Logan.). 

Newbury 17 (Tries: Aiono, Smaje. Cons: Feeney, Aiono. Pen: Feeney.). 

Nottingham maintain sixth placed after this home win over Newbury who are down to 11th in the league table.    

Nottingham were always in front in this fixture although Newbury did pull back to 20-17 after 47 minutes when scrum half Dan Smaje went in for a try and Reuben Aiono converted.  

In the first half Nottingham were in front in the opening minute when wing Josh Kay went over and Stenhouse converted. Blair Feeney got Newbury off the mark three minutes later but a second Nottingham try from Adam Corcoran saw them 14-3 ahead after eight minutes.

Centre Aiono went over for a try for Newbury and Feeney converted but two Stenhouse penalty goals late in the half as the home side 20-10 ahead at the break.

After Newbury pulled it back to three points in the 47th minute it took the home side till the 70th minute to pull away with replacement back Will Logan going over for a try, it was not converted and Logan got the next score when he dropped a 75th minute drop goal.

They sealed the win when another replacement back Mark Woodrow went over for an injury time try, which secured the try bonus point, and added the conversion.  

 

Pertemps Bees 12 (Tries: Knight, Takarangi. Con: Walsh.). 

Otley 33 (Tries: Oakes, Shuttleworth, Brown, Fullman. Cons: Kitching 2. Pens: Kitching 3.). 

The Bees drop to the bottom of the table after this defeat at home to Otley who are up to ninth in the table.     

Otley were 12-0 ahead at the break with tries at each end of the half. Second row Jason Oakes put them ahead in the 5th minute and Ian Shuttleworth on as a temp replacement for Robert Whatmuff got the second in injury time at the end of the first half and Robin Kitching converted.

In the second half they continued to pull away with tries form replacement scrum half Andy Brown and prop Kris Fullman to secure the four try bonus point after 64 minutes.

The home side did manage a couple of late tries but Kitching kept the scoreboard ticking for the visitors with three penalty goals.

 

Sedgley Park 35 (Tries: Feeley 2, Voortman, Cox, De Jager. Cons: Jones 4. Pens: Jones 2.). 

Exeter Chiefs 28 (Tries: Penalty try, Willis, Staniforth, Ward. Cons: Staniforth 4.). 

Park are off the bottom of the table after this home win over seventh placed Exeter Chiefs as they maintain their excellent home form.     

The Chiefs had the better of the first half and went in 21-12 ahead after scoring three converted tries. The first came after just six minute s when they were award a penalty try and Adam Staniforth converted. There were further tries from Flanker Gary Willis and Staniforth who converted them both. For Park wing Jon Feeley and centre Ian Voortman went over and Phil Jones added a conversion and Park’s good recent record at home looked under pressure.

It looked even worse five minutes into the second half when the Chiefs went 28-12 ahead when full back Stephen Ward went over and Staniforth converted.

After that it was all Park after they went in for their third try in the 55th minute as second row Sean Cox went over and Jones converted.

Arno De Jager went in for the fourth try on 64 minutes and Jones converted and when he slotted over a penalty goal four minutes later the home side were 29-28 ahead.

They sealed the win when Feeley completed a double in the 75th minute with his 13th try of the campaign.

 

Cornish Pirates 8 (Try: Cattle. Pen: Jarvis.). 

NEC Harlequins 29 (Tries: Williams, Keogh, Greenwood, Monye. Cons: Jarvis 3. Pen: Jarvis.). 

The Quins move a step clear the National One title with this win at Kenwyn Hill over the Cornish Pirates in front of nearly 6,000.      

The visitors were off the mark in the 8th minute when winger Ugo Monye went in for a try and Adrian Jarvis slotted over the conversion. Jarvis added a 17th minute penalty goal before the Pirates got off the mark. On 20 minutes scrum half Gavin Cattle went over and Lee Jarvis failed with the conversion but did add a penalty goal four minutes later to make it 10-8.

Just before the half hour mark the Quins got a second try when full back Tom Williams went over and Jarvis again converted to make it 17-8 which was the half time score.

In the second half Quins went further ahead 10 minutes in when the other wing Simon Keogh went in for his 15th try of the season and move to joint top of the try scorers list.

They wrapped up the win and the four try bonus point in the 69th minute when centre Will Greenwood went over for a try.

 

Doncaster 35 (Tries: Lane, Montague, O Cook, Van Vuuren, Grainger. Cons: Liley 4, Benson.). 

Earth Titans 34 (Tries: Carruthers, Fourie, Donald, Claassens. Cons: Whitehead 4. Pens: Whitehead 2.). 

Doncaster win the Yorkshire derby to close to within a point of 11th placed Newbury.

The Titans were first on the scoreboard with a penalty goal from fly half Mike Whitehead but were 14-3 down by the end of the first quarter with the home side scoring tries through scrum half Llyr Lane and No 8 Dan Montague which were both converted by Rob Liley.

Back came the Titans with a try from right wing Gillan Carruthers and Whitehead converted and slotted over a second penalty goal to make it a one point game.

By half time though the home side had run in two more tries to secure the bonus point with winger Ollie Cook and Donovan Van Vuuren touching down and Liley adding the extras to go in 28-13 ahead.

Titans need the first score of the second half and got it when flanker Hendrie Fourie went over and Whitehead converted in the 44th minute.

Just after the hour mark and Doncaster went in for try number five with flanker Simon Grainger going over and Jon Benson, on for Liley, converting.  

The Titans responded soon after with their third try as No 8 Scott Donald went in for his 13th try of the season. They got to within a point of Doncaster in the 79th minute when full back Ernst Claassens went over and Whitehead converted to make it two bonus points despite the defeat.
