Esher 7 (Try: Cormack. Con: Hallett.).
Waterloo 41 (Tries: Payne 2, Kerfoot, Handley, Duffy. Cons: Nutt 5. Pens: Nutt 2.).
Waterloo clinched promotion back into National One with this excellent away win at third placed Esher.
This was built up as the game of the season, the game that should have decided the second promotion spot. However Esher’s recent performances put paid to that. It should though have been an opportunity for the Esher players to show their true fighting spirit. Alas this was not to be.
Waterloo opened up with a penalty on 2 minutes, Esher lost Dave MacCallum on 3 minutes and it all went down hill from there very quickly. With Esher having to re-shuffle their back line bringing on Dan Taylor onto the wing and putting Matt Moore in the centre, Esher lost their shape with so many players playing out of position. Waterloo took full advantage of Esher’s defensive frailties and also from some gifted interception handed to them by the Esher backs.
Three converted tries and two penalties before half time, without and Esher response was always going to be a hard task to turn around.
Waterloo began the second half with a try after only two minutes, a try that guaranteed them promotion. Esher managed a consolation try when the forwards got a rolling maul over the try line and skipper Duncan Cormack came up with the ball, Neil Hallett converted. Waterloo had the last word with another converted try and Esher were on the wrong end of a 41 point to 7 stuffing, one of the heaviest defeats suffered on home soil.
With three games left, and 14 points clear of 4th place, Esher must now either come up with some results or else the season will just ebb away into nothing, and that is not what we want to happen. If offered third place before the season started I am sure we would have taken it.
